Vegetarian Instant Pot Pumpkin Chili

I hope you’re not sick of pumpkin recipes because WE STILL COMIN’ ATCHYA. This one is a quintessential Fall recipe because not only is it pumpkin, but it’s also chili. This recipe will be so nice for those of you who live in a place where the weather is getting chillier. Chillier. Get it? Anyhow, this pumpkin chili recipe is surprisingly wonderful. I was lucky enough to find it from Bowl of Delicious–a really delightful food blog.

Whole-Wheat Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cookies

Whew, that title is a bit of a mouthful, huh? Well so are these cookies! Though they be small, they are mighty with flavor and warmth! Yes, another pumpkin recipe. And don’t expect it to be the last! Fall is my favorite season of the year, I think, and although Los Angeles isn’t very good at crisp weather, I’m still gonna do the pumpkin up! Whole-wheat pumpkin chocolate chip cookies, here we come! I based this recipe off of Tried and Tasty’s wonderful recipe!

Instant Pot Pumpkin Curry

It’s FALL! Do you know what that means? PUMPKINS, PUMPKIN EVERYTHING. And we thought, with our new little toy called the Instant Pot, that we would make some pumpkin Instant Pot recipes! Although the weather doesn’t get too cool during a Los Angeles October, Hungry and I still enjoy a good curry. So, what was the next natural step? Pumpkin Curry! This recipe is inspired and based off Piping Pot Curry’s recipe. This pumpkin curry is smooth, flavorful, and warm. We served it over brown rice, but you could also serve with any type of rice, naan, or flatbread you desire.

India’s Tandoori Hollywood

You may have noticed that India’s Tandoori – Hollywood isn’t on our 2018 LA’s Must-Visit Restaurants list. That’s because we were simply craving Indian food one night and instead of ordering in like we usually do, we pulled up Yelp and looked in vain for walkable Indian restaurants. That’s when I was blinking a few times at my screen when an Indian restaurant I hadn’t seen before showed, with a location that was only 0.3 miles away! Now, here’s the humdinger. Once we finally discovered where the restaurant was, we realized that the Himilayan/Indian restaurant that was there before it was gone. This location had a frequent turn-over for restaurants. Sometimes, it would be the same management, but simply a re-branding, so needless to say, we were a little skeptical. But, cautious as we were, we still tramped on down to eat at India’s Tandoori Hollywood.

Guilt-Free Vegetarian Lasagna

Lasagna. Thick noodles, layers of cheese, sauce, more layers of cheese. Comes with a side of steaming hot guilt. Oh, did I ruin it? Sorry. Yeah. Typical lasagna is heavy, full of lots of cheese, meat, and white starches. Hey, that’s totally fine in moderation, I’m all for it. However! I have discovered (thank you, American Heritage Cooking) a wonderful guilt-free whole-wheat vegetarian lasagna. Before you turn your nose up, IT TASTES GOOD. It tastes good by my standards, it tastes good by HUNGRY’S standards. That’s when you know it’s good. He takes his cheesy pastas seriously and I kid you not when I would catch him continually digging into the dish of lasagna heaven. I could eat this lasagna without feeling like a ball of cheese after who needed to be rolled to bed. I ate it, I felt great, and then I ate it the next night.

Aside from the healthiness, I was worried about the difficulty. I don’t think I had ever made lasagna before on my own. But really, the hardest part was chopping up the vegetables! So yeah, not too bad. It’s just layers. Layers of the best stuff of life. So yeah, let’s dig in.

Losing Jonathan Gold

This is a heavy, heavy day in Los Angeles. While I was watching (on television) a hostage situation wrap up at a local Trader Joe’s in Silver Lake, I was scrolling through my Instagram, when I saw more horrible news. Jonathan Gold dies at 57. What?! That must be a joke? He’s been fine. However, apparently, he hasn’t been fine. In early July, Gold was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and, damn, it must’ve been aggressive for him to be gone already. This is devastating for Los Angeles. Devastating for us at Hungry & Fit too, he was a hero in the food industry. He even inspired us to do our LA’s Must-Visit Restaurants quest.

Who was Jonathan Gold? He was a Pulitzer-prize, James Beard-award winning food critic, but that doesn’t even cover it. He drove a green pick-up truck and barely turned in his articles in on time. He used his art–and it was art–to shine light on small “ethnic” food joints and lift Los Angeles up to be respected across the food industry alongside New York and San Francisco. Jonathan Gold focused on being positive, unlike many food critics (or critics in general). As he became more and more popular, he knew that his voice was powerful, and he used it for good.

Lukshon: LA Restaurant Review

It’s been a while since we posted regarding our epic eating tour of Los Angeles (gotta-eat-em-all). Remember that one where we made a list of the must-visit restaurants of 2018? There have been a few things that have gotten in the way since then like our honeymoon, but have no fear, we have stand-out restaurants to review for you! Next stop on our tasting-the-best-of-Los-Angeles list is Lukshon.

Lukshon, a modern restaurant focused on Southeast-Asian flavors, was brought to life by the same chef who opened the famous Father’s Office, Angelenos’ favorite burger & beer spot–Sang Yoon. This man knows how to hit you with flavor and keep your palette guessing and craving for more. The creativity of his work is out of bounds and stunning. Don’t get tricked by the menu prices–this place is pricey because “hot plates” and “cold plates” are small plates and you’re bound to get a good amount of them. Even though we weren’t ready for the price of the meal, we can sit here and tell you that it’s worth it. It’s a dining experience you aren’t likely to forget.

Anthony Bourdain

Remembering Anthony Bourdain

There truly are only a handful of individuals in the culinary world that truly brought something new to the table. One of those individuals, Anthony Bourdain, has left the table, and with that, a seat that will be extremely hard to fill.

While I enjoyed cartoons and sports growing up like every other kid, I watched more food television than most kids my age. For Christmas, I’d ask my mom for microplanes, honey dippers, and other obscure cooking utensils to feel more like the chefs that I idolized on television. She’d let me help with food prep in the kitchen and might even let me make my own dish from time to time, knowing full well that it’d end up being inedible. (Note, I was VERY young when this started.) My fixation for in-the-kitchen cooking shows like Emeril Live, Good Eats, Two Fat Ladies and many others, over different channels, never completely faded, but after watching these for years and years, I need new inspiration.
