Eating NOLA

This page is still a work in progress as we go through the nearly 150 unique spots where we’ve dined in the area. Please consider that these scores are relative to New Orleans. This scoring system is unique to the experience of living and dining in this area. If we were back living in Los Angeles or New York, the standards would increase and scores would most likely decrease.

Westbank:

5 – Tout de Suite (Cafe) – we can’t even put this place into words. you’ll have to read the full review. we love it that much (A)

5 – Eclair Delicieux (Bakery) – our go to bakery that offers my favorite red velvet cake in the area, as well as Alana’s favorite macarons (A)

5 – Tavolino (Pizza) – possibly the best dining experience on the westbank, actually good pizza, a great drink menu, and a fun vibe in an amazing location (A)

5 – Scuba Steve’s (Snoballs) – the best snoballs we’ve had, with ice of the highest quality and natural flavor options (A)

4.5 – Pho Bang (Vietnamese) – our go to pho place, with other viet options, you won’t be let down, very vegetarian friendly (A)

4.5 – La Providencia (Mexican) – restaurant with a heart and the best tasting Mexican food on the westbank, must get nachos (A)

4.5 – Cleopatra (Lebanese) – Chris’ favorite place on the westbank, he can’t get away from their mint lemonade and shawarma platter (C)

4.5 – Banana Blossom (Thai) – possibly the classiest/hippest spot on the westbank, feels like you’re in Los Angeles when you’re inside, can be westbank pricey

4.5 – Hong Minh (Chinese) – on par with any New York or San Francisco china town dining experience (C)

4 – Jasmine Rice ice (Thai) – dependable, great tasting Thai food

4 – Ditali’s (Pizza) – our most frequented delivery pizza that makes decent pizza the same every time (A)

4 – TD Seafood (Vietnamese) – the best tofu vermicelli Alana has ever eaten, served by passionate wait staff

4 – Cafe Zen (Japanese) – clean and quiet Japanese food with perfect execution on their menu items, lives up to its name

4 – Mr. Bubble’s (Vietnamese) – $5 meal alert and overall the best banh mis in the area, plus they serve Dong Phuong cake for mardi gras

4 – New Orleans Food & Spirits (Southern) – a sizable and classy west bank spot with a brand new oyster bar

4 – Sun Ray Grill (American) – a pricier but delicious American option on the westbank

4 – Los Compadres (Mexican) – lovely family restaurant with charming live music and thoughtful service

4 – La23 BBQ (BBQ) –  arguably the best bbq on the west bank, if you can manage to stop by when they’re open

4 – Southern Charm (Southern) – only enjoyed for take out, but want to return to their classy dining room. one of the most complex gumbo in the area

4 – Empress of China (Chinese) – we enjoyed the unreal portion sizes, extensive menu, attentive service and exaggerated decor. do not order too much!

3.5 – Panda King (Dim Sum) – a great concept that can feel like an overwhelming experience, new diners might have a hard time feeling comfortable

3.5 – Chateau Orleans (Poboys) – local spot with great service and po boys, especially the artichoke option 

3.5 – Las Maracas (Mexican)  – great family service in an area with few sit down options

3.5 – Mangu (Caribbean) – authentic and filling plates, but they didn’t devein their shrimp

3.5 – Panda King (Chinese buffet) – the best buffet we’ve found on the westbank

3.5 – Sahara Cafe (Lebanese) – solid Lebanese restaurant

3.5 – Taste of Thailand (Thai) – some of the best tasting Thai food, with incredibly slow service; a unique take on mango sticky rice

3.5 – Tofu House (Vietnamese) – fantastic tofu made in the house, that they put in their banh mis

3.5 – Taco Daddy’s (Mexican) – a newer, small family owned spot with fun decor and great parking that just needs more flavor; we hope they succeed

3.5 – Oishii Sushi house (Japanese) – an all around good experience, with fresh fish and professional service

3.5 – Amore (Bakery & Cafe) – an extremely well decorated bakery with great seating that offers a large variety of goodies

3.5 – Creative Cakes (Bakery) – only had the red velvet cupcakes, but would recommend and happily eat them again

3.5 – Dimartino’s (Sandwiches) – very questionable service but flavor packed and filling sandwiches, both poboys and the best muffulettas

3.5 – Mo’s Pizza (Pizza) – a less accessible pizza spot with very solid no frills pizza pies

3.5 – Hook’s (Seafood) – a great value spot for delicious fried seafood, but try to eat it fresh. make sure to ask for the owner’s special sauce

3.5 – Fuji Hana (Japanese, Hibachi). – an always busy hibachi spot with great food, but far from the most entertaining chefs

3.5 – Shawarma on the Run (Middle Eastern) 0 a much needed quick mediterranean option in a convenient yet busy location

3.5 – La Conquistadora (Mexican)  – insanely delicious food, killer salsa and the most painfully and confusingly slow service

3.5 – Bandeja Paisa (Colombian) – fresh, fun and flavorful food with menu options that you can’t find in many other places

3.5 – August Moon (Vietnamese) – one of the best pan asian menus, with tremendous service that makes us want to return

3 – Brother’s (Sandwiches) – a convenient and affordable spot that delivers tasty and quick food

3 – Sweet Shack (Snoballs) – our most frequented snoball spot with great service and decent ice; don’t get the ice cream

3 – Pho Kim Loan (Vietnamese) – a clean and quiet Vietnamese spot without faults or standouts

3 – Freddie’s Chicken & Waffles (Southern) – incredibly nice but slow service, impressed by the veggie sausage option

3 – Le Dalat (Vietnamese) – bizarrely situated in a banquet hall with the largest and most authentic menu we’ve ever seen

3 – Reginelli’s (Pizza). – okay Italian chain that feels too much like a chain, but has a sizable menu

3 – Daiwa (Japanese) – a fun dining area with an ambitious menu that isn’t quite executed to expectations

3 – Saigon Bistro II. (Vietnamese) – a clean and well decorated Vietnamese spot that delivers professional service and good food

3 – Olive Branch Cafe (Italian) – nice service and a great value, but it feels like you’re eating at a bigger chain

3 – Gyro Grill (Middle Eastern) – run of the mill mediterranean fast-ish food

3 – Pho Hoa (Vietnamese) – a standard Vietnamese restaurant with a tight parking lot that left Alana’s stomach uncertain

2.5 – Bamboo Cafe (Vietnamese) – a limited menu with very authentic protein choices that might not settle with pickier eaters

2.5 – Frigid Zone (Snoballs) – a standard snoball experience that isn’t always open when they advertise it

2.5 – Los Panchos (Mexican) 0 run of the mill Mexican food in a cute corner spot

2.5 – Avellino (pizza) – decent pizza, but we never even thought about ordering a second time

2.5 – Salvo’s (Southern)  – high energy atmosphere but definitely got food poisoning from their incredibly rich fried shrimp poboy

2.5 – Nobuko (Japanese) – a large and open Japanese spot with heartbreakingly warm service, as their food fails to deliver

2 – China Kitchen (Chinese) – tasted alright but left our stomachs feeling questionable

2 – Cafe 615 Home of da Wabbit (American) – an underwhelming dining experience with aloof service and food that didn’t make you want to come back

2 – Dream House (Dessert) – extremely dry red velvet, good macarons and okay drinks in a fun little spot

2 – Roule (Rolled ice cream) – excruciatingly slow service with very little reward

2 – Sweet Wonders (rolled ice cream) – apparently no one can do rolled ice cream well around here

2 – Turmeric (Indian) – this one needs more than one sentence, but I basically had it out with an employee and stormed out, which NEVER happens

2 – 9 Roses (Vietnamese) – the most overhyped place on the west bank; average food with subpar service

2 – Dairy Dip (Ice Cream) – was our favorite ice cream place until we found out they supported racist behavior, will not return

2 – Huey P’s Pizzeria – Rough customer service, plus they managed to give us an amazing pizza and a raw pizza in the same order

1.5 – Adam’s Catfish House (Southern) – the most overtly religiously decorated barn with nothing more than a few fried options
