Milford’s On Third (Baton Rouge, LA)

When we were recently house hunting in Louisiana, we drove through the state capital of Baton Rouge. With a population of 1/4 million and the home to LSU’s ~30,000 students, you’d imagine the food between New Orleans and Lafayette (the heart of Cajun country) would be pretty good. It is. Unfortunately, there are a lot of very popular and extremely busy seafood restaurants and when you’re traveling, you don’t have time to wait for an hour or two. We didn’t even have enough time to find parking for those spots. After checking Yelp, we headed to the more historic downtown area, easily found a free parking spot in front of a beautiful church and walked in Milford’s on Third.

Mia and the White Lion (Movie Review)

“I really hated the movie, but I liked the message at the end.” That is what I told Alana when we left the theater at Universal City Walk. We just saw Dumbo a few days ago and were planning on either seeing Shazam or Hellboy. With our AMC Stubs A-List, we try to go to the movies as often as possible. Even though we love fun blockbusters, most of our favorite movies end up being smaller releases like Jiro Dreams of Sushi. I’m a sucker for anything related to nature or animals. When I saw they were playing Mia and the White Lion, I ldid a bit of research to find out more. The description gave me Life of Pi vibes; I had to see it. (I know Life of Pi had a tiger and not a lion.)

Seafood

Why We Eat A Lot of Fish!

The most consumed primary protein source in our home is probably seafood. We eat a lot of tuna. Salmon is also one of our go-to meals. Canned mackerel, sardines and even anchovies are staples in our pantry. You might even find a variety of frozen, wild caught fish in our freezer… in case of emergencies. (For anyone wondering, Morningstar, Tofurkey, Beyond Meat and other “fake meat” products are our second most common primary protein source.) We eat fish because it is, in our opinions, more humane and sustainable than consuming other animals such as cows, pigs and chickens. It can also be healthier, if done properly. Even though I am not a vegetarian, I was a pescatarian for nearly a year when we lived in Boulder. If you manage your macronutrient and overall caloric intake properly, and supplement micronutrients such as vitamins/minerals properly, you can most likely live a healthy lifestyle without certain sources of protein.

Old School, Hardcore Training

Aleksandr Karelin is one of the greatest athletes of all time. He dominated the world of wrestling for a long time. Even though most people have either forgotten him, or never knew who he was, I often go back to his training videos for inspiration. Sure, a lot of us will YouTube the Rocky montages. I’m guilty of that as well. Karelin, however, brought a truly unique mixture of size, strength, flexibility and overall athleticism. It led to his dominance. We aren’t born with all of that. We develop it over time, through constant training. Old school, hardcore training.

Supporting Sweat Angels by Causely

A few months ago, I shot a commercial/promo for Best Friends Animal Society. My co-star Roxie, who is one of my all-time favorite rescues, sat with me for a long time as I recited lines to the camera. She was an angel. (She is currently in a home and so far, so good.) You don’t see a whole lot of her during the commercial, as the video features amazing footage of rescue animals. You will, however, hear my voice telling you about the partnership between Causely’s Sweat Angels and Best Friends.

Spring Cleaning (Marie Kondo)

Every season (even though we don’t really have seasons here in Los Angeles), we clean! I think mostly everyone has heard of spring cleaning, where the stereotypical American family empties out their garage, attic, basement and closets onto the driveway and gets rid of everything they don’t need via garage sale. The weather is nice, so it makes sense. I feel like we did something like that growing up. Now, we do this with the turn of every season, as we’ve gotten rid of more stuff/junk/crap over the years.

The Best Workout Headphones

If you’re here looking for answers, you might want to look elsewhere. Despite working out in the gym, every single day for the past 12 years, I still haven’t discovered the best ones. Some people don’t like training with music, but I struggle when I’m training without music. Sure, there are some activities that don’t mix well with wearing headphones, but for gym sessions (especially lifting weights) I benefit from the motivation and constant intensity boost that comes with good tunes!

An Interview with LAMA

Last year, LAMA reached out to us to conduct an interview. We get dozens of emails every week. People either want us to review a product, write for their website, write for our website, etc. I was intrigued by LAMA. It was a video based platform where journalists interview founders and entrepreneurs in an effort to share useful information with others. If you visit their website, you’ll see countless interviews with motivational and successful individuals.
