Isle of Dogs Movie Review

Three word review of Isle of Dogs: quirky yet entertaining. Alternate: must love dogs.

It’s also quite charming, endearing even. I’m not a huge Wes Anderson fan. I couldn’t sit through Life Aquatic (though Fit loves it) or the Royal Tenenbaums, although I did enjoy The Grand Budapest Hotel. Fantastic Mr Fox looked intriguing, but not enough to see it, apparently. I’ve missed all of his other works, but after seeing Isle of Dogs, I might reconsider watching his older films.

Seriously Healthy Whole-Wheat Muffins

Being that it was St. Patrick’s Day recently, I had myself some leftover buttermilk from when I made Jodi’s amazing Irish Soda Bread (fail-proof recipe!). What should I do with this extra buttermilk? I could make another loaf of that delicious soda bread or…I could try a new recipe! I wanted it to be healthy and something guilt-free. With my buttermilk-searching glasses on, I scoured through healthy recipes until I found one I wanted to base my recipe on. Luckily, trusty ol’ King Arthur Flour had a great one! I healthified it even more than it already was (I cut the sugar) and whipped it up. These muffins are so good without being sweet and they pack a serious punch of fiber. They are also incredibly easy to make. Major plus! Takes under thirty minutes.

Pacific Rim Uprising Movie Review

There was a lot of excitement leading up to Pacific Rim. The 2013 release of the first Pacific Rim directed by Guillermo del Toro allowed the creative mastermind a huge budget which would be needed to create such a large-scale blockbuster. With a star-studded cast and a composer as the top of their game, what could possibly go wrong? Any nerd that loved transformers, Gundam, Godzilla or nearly anything in the realm of science fantasy fiction would surely love this, right?

Well, that was the problem. Expectations were far too high and nearly everyone that it aimed to please was, to some degree, disappointed. The result was a relatively poor domestic box office performance, although the overseas audience (especially in China) agreed with the fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes, enjoying the sheer entertainment value the film brought.

Fast forward to 2018 to the sequel, Pacific Rim Uprising, and expectations were far lower. Without legendary creator Guillermo del Toro, composer Ramin Djawadi and the first movie’s lead actor, we felt the film took a much different approach. Using a much smaller budget, they decided to use John Boyega’s skills to create a much more charming experience. The result was a film that made its budget back on opening weekend, dethroning Black Panther, despite its much lower score (~25%) on Rotten Tomatoes.

5 Tips to Living a Healthier Lifestyle in 2018

Having a healthy and good lifestyle is not just about eating good food and treating yourself to holidays in Hawaii. There is a lot more you can do to make sure your 2018 lifestyle is healthy.

Have a positive mindset about working out

It is so easy to begin going to the gym today and to quit after a week or two. With constant mental roadblocks about working out, it is quite easy to develop negative energy towards it. The trick is to shift your mindset about working out and think of it as a need instead of a want. It is easy to manipulate your body through how you think because the two are linked. Be realistic about your workout goals and stick to them in order to achieve t

hem in the long run. Study your body, and find out how to satisfy its needs in terms of health and fitness, for instance, if you have back problems which may affect your workout routines, get access of the Richmond chiropractic services. Also, go for regular body checkups to ensure you are in good shape.

How to Use Yelp

There’s a good chance that the only time you’ve heard about Yelp, it didn’t help you build trust in their brand. They’ve had a ton of bad publicity and we’ve actually had plenty of negative experiences with them, but let’s focus on the positive. Here in LA, Jonathan Gold’s 101 list is the “gold standard” for where to eat. LA Weekly just came out with a 99 Essential Restaurant list, and we can’t help but think that whoever compiled that list was GREATLY influenced by Gold. Sadly, even here in LA, very few people outside of the food industry know who he is.

It can be hard to find good places to eat and most people aren’t willing to do a ton of research. They don’t want to Google “best food critic in LA” and then read through Gold’s hundreds of reviews over the year. Instead, we look for more convenient options. Whether it is a reflection of our laziness or desire to save time, services that compile reviews have become extremely popular. Rotten Tomatoes is a great resource for movies, Amazon for consumer goods and Metacritic for video games. While Yelp is far from a household name, it does provide that similar service for businesses… especially places to eat!

There are two ways to use Yelp. You can either check out reviews as a guest or you can become a user and review businesses. Technically, a third way exists, as a business owner but we’re not going that direction today. As a guest, you can quickly type in “sushi” in New York and get an idea where the restaurant is, how much it costs, when it is open and what the population thinks about the food. While we don’t necessarily agree with the aggregate scores of certain places, and while we don’t necessarily trust Yelp’s filter, you’re much better off using Yelp than just walking into the first place you see.

LA’s Best Secret Menu Foods: Jitlada’s Green Beans

We hope Chef Jazz doesn’t get mad at us for telling her secret, but we can’t help but want to bring more people into the Jitlada family. That is, after all, exactly what it feels like after you’ve been there a few times. When you’re sweating bullets while eating her southern curry (nowhere near the hottest on their menu) and Chef Jazz comes over to fill up your water, there’s nothing more endearing than the look on her face. Half of it is a sort of admiration, based in the fact that you’re going for it, halfway through the bowl without complaining, and half of it is a grin, knowing that it is a “2” out of 10 on her spice-meter.

A Wrinkle in Time

A Wrinkle in Time (Movie Review)

We interrupt your normal stream of food and fitness for our occasional wandering into movies or travelThere may be spoilers in this review.

There have been many highly anticipated films in 2018. Some performed well, critically and/or in the box office, while others didn’t meet expectations. If you read our review for Black Panther, you’d know that we absolutely loved the film. With some huge blockbusters slated for summer release, Disney wanted to try to take control of Winter/Spring, and their adaptation of A Wrinkle in Time would help do that, or so they hoped.

A Wrinkle in Time didn’t meet the studio’s expectations, as box office numbers were mediocre and it failed to capture the hearts of critics. Still, we were undeterred and wanted to see if they could recreate a story that we both grew up reading. A Wrinkle in Time wasn’t summer reading in my school, it was part of the curriculum. We read it in class (I believe in 5th grade, possibly 6th) and would discuss it every day, reflecting on it through homework assignments. I would often skip summer reading, but that couldn’t be done here. While I didn’t love the critical analysis in class, I was amazed by the images and adventure. That is exactly what I associate with this story.

Holy Roly: LA Restaurant Review

Up next on our Must-Visit LA Restaurants of 2018 is actually a dessert spot! Surely, if you’re reading this review, you’ve checked Holy Roly out on Yelp. If you haven’t, we’ll summarize the criticism on Yelp in two words: overpriced and parking. Nearly all of the complaints come from a lack of familiarity of the LA food scene, especially Koreatown. So, to debunk those myths… any dessert under $10 is normal and never think you’ll find parking in K-town.

Maybe we have an unfair advantage, having lived a few blocks away. We knew where to park and when to go. As a result, we didn’t spend thirty minutes parking and wait in any line here, so we weren’t in a bad mood before we started eating. We found out about Holy Roly from Maneet Chauhan, since it didn’t actually exist yet when we lived here. We actually discovered our love for rolled ice cream, in all places, at a Thai-owned and operated location in Montgomery, Alabama.
