Introducing… West of Greatness!

July 12th 2023 was the only time in the past year we’ve published a post that was actually written by us. It might actually be the only post we’ve written in the last two years. This blog, which we’ve had since 2012, is far from what it used to be. Traffic has decreased. Visitors have decreased. Sponsors have decreased. Why? We could blame the introduction of newer forms of video based social media. We could blame plenty of things. The truth is simple… we just haven’t put effort into it. We haven’t prioritized it. We’ve been busy. Maintaining a home in the harsh climate of New Orleans isn’t easy. Alana/Fit has a very demanding corporate career, as well as some hobbies she loves, including writing, book clubs, and playing rugby. As for Chris/Hungry/me… I’ve been working on something a little absurd.

The Best Cold Treat in New Orleans

When we say, ‘cold treat in New Orleans,’ we bet you think of a snoball. And you’re spot on for what New Orleans is known for during the summer. But New Orleans has been hiding a cold treat from y’all, specifically the Westbank of New Orleans.

Happy National Pizza Day!

Apparently, February 9th is National Pizza Day. Google isn’t sure why, but we don’t care. We will take any excuse to eat more pizza. Thursday is usually our weekly pizza night, so we shifted it a day. No complaints here.

To make this a worthwhile post, here is a list of our top five spots to get pizza in New Orleans. In no particular order…

Barracuda Tacos (New Orleans, Louisiana)

Why is that place always so busy? Sure, the location is great. The name is fun. But who would wait in such a long line for tacos? In Los Angeles, I get it, but New Orleans? Maybe the lack of great tacos has made this place royalty. We always wanted to try Barracuda Tacos but refused to wait in that line. Fortunately, they opened another location on our side of the river! So, naturally, we ate almost everything there.

Le Cafe Eblouir (Gretna, LA)

Hungry & Fit are typically on the wrong side of the Mississippi River when it comes to the fun, cute places to hang out and eat. New Orleans and even Metairie have most of those spots, with a few exceptions in Algiers. Fortunately, earlier this year, we received a covid-related blessing in disguise. A local pastry chef, who had worked in hotels, decided to open up her own cafe instead of fighting to find a job in the recently unpredictable hospitality industry. Feast your eyes on the treats inside Le Cafe Eblouir!

We’re Back!

We started this blog in August of 2012. It has been a real roller coaster ride ever since the beginning. I can’t remember the last time we went over a month without publishing an article. Sometimes, we don’t find the time to create our own work, but we maintain a steady stream of posts through partners and guests. That wasn’t the case this past month, but we’re glad to be back. Where did we go?

Introducing our Guide to Eating NOLA

Tomorrow, we’re going to unveil a new page on the blog… our guide to Eating NOLA. Since we first moved to New Orleans, about a year ago, we’ve eaten at nearly 150 different places. (Multiple locations of the same chains don’t count.) We’ve dined at some of the most popular spots, while we’ve also found some dives that have very little press. We’ve gone big, with four or five trips to Commander’s Palace. Also, we’ve gone small, with a birthday dinner at a tiny Chinese restaurant in Gretna. What will the guide look like?

Tomorrow on YouTube: Millennial Food Quiz

Recently, a Facebook friend shared the featured image on this post, which is a millennial food quiz. This friend lives in the New Orleans area and most of the people who commented on the post had relatively low scores, which I mention in tomorrow’s video. I can only imagine what the results for someone in Los Angeles or San Francisco would look like. My score wouldn’t have been nearly as high if we didn’t live in Hollywood for three years

In tomorrow’s video, I go over the list one item at a time. I’ll also reveal if I know what it is, if I’ve eaten it, and where I’ve eaten it… if I remember. I know, this would’ve been a much better video if Alana and I recorded it together… maybe we’ll do a part two!
