Barracuda Tacos (New Orleans, Louisiana)

Why is that place always so busy? Sure, the location is great. The name is fun. But who would wait in such a long line for tacos? In Los Angeles, I get it, but New Orleans? Maybe the lack of great tacos has made this place royalty. We always wanted to try Barracuda Tacos but refused to wait in that line. Fortunately, they opened another location on our side of the river! So, naturally, we ate almost everything there.

It was busy, but the outdoor seating was ample. It was cold out, but they had patio heaters that worked well. We sat on the quiet half near the families from the neighborhood. The other side was filled with a louder crowd. Overall, the atmosphere was great. You walk up and order. We asked for one of every taco, chips with queso, a side quesadilla, a margarita, and Mexican coke. They asked if we wanted a side of guac and salsa so we could try it. We said yes. Looking back, charging $3 for that guacamole was borderline criminal. Charging $1 for that much salsa might even be worse. Luckily, they were both really, really good. The bill with tax and tip was $68. Pretty steep for a taco stand without table service. It better be good.

Overall, it was good. Not great, but good. Not worth the money, but it isn’t one we regret trying. We’d definitely go back and just order smarter. If you have a large appetite like us, you probably shouldn’t come here. Why? Because the value isn’t there, but as a light meal or snack, it works.

My favorite dish was actually the chips and queso/guac/salsa. The chorizo taco is the only one I would order again. The chicken was well cooked, but lacked flavor. The beef taco came out cold, with a lot of grisly bites. The pork taco was okay, but nothing to remember.

Alana’s favorite dish was the farmer taco, which I believe was advertised as vegan. It was eaten so fast I didn’t get to try it. She devoured the fish taco, which I didn’t care for at all. I thought it was over fried and tasted like the deep fryer. It was, however, very crunchy, which I respect. We both didn’t like the mushroom taco. It was the only thing we threw out, which is shocking, since we adore mushrooms.

Unfortunately, it isn’t well lit so the pictures here aren’t the most appetizing. The food was well served and well presented, with the exception of the beef taco. All of the other dishes were served hot. Also, the beef taco was the first bite I took. It wasn’t cold because I waited. The other tacos were hot minutes later. I understand resting meat, but it rested to the point of rubber.

A cool and clearly popular place that makes some great food and some food I wouldn’t eat again. We’ll probably be back when we’re not that hungry for some chips/queso and maybe one taco each. As always, stay hungry and fit!
