Many people think regular exercise is the crux of all fitness, but it isn’t the only dictator of physical prowess. There’s an increasing focus on nutrition throughout the health and fitness world, as nutritionists are only beginning to unravel the important benefits that different eating habits and ingredients can bring to the table. What people eat actually has more of an impact on overall health and fitness potential than exercise. It’s important for weight loss, most specific sustained fitness programs and attentiveness to many diseases and health conditions.

The Best Workout Headphones
If you’re here looking for answers, you might want to look elsewhere. Despite working out in the gym, every single day for the past 12 years, I still haven’t discovered the best ones. Some people don’t like training with music, but I struggle when I’m training without music. Sure, there are some activities that don’t mix well with wearing headphones, but for gym sessions (especially lifting weights) I benefit from the motivation and constant intensity boost that comes with good tunes!
Do Health Hacks Actually Work?
There are so many products that are available in just about every market imaginable. It takes days, weeks and sometimes even months of research before you decide which TV or car to buy. In Los Angeles, there are thousands of fitness facilities, which means there are so many hairs to split when figuring out which one is the best for you. You can just look at price or location, or take other factors into consideration as well. With the increase of visibility from social media, especially Facebook, you’re being bombarded with targeted ads and marketing every moment that you’re awake.
Almost everyone, especially here in Los Angeles, has to work two or three jobs to pay rent. Unless you inherited money or are supported by your parents (or the few true success stories) you rarely have enough time to take care of yourself. You might eat poorly or skip workouts because you’re so broke or exhausted from having to work so much, that you’re always looking for shortcuts to help. Whether that means holistic medicine to avoid expensive doctor trips (read about my $6,000 an hour ER visit at Cedars) or magical pills that burn fat off your body while you’re sleeping, there are many temptations available just one click away, thanks to Amazon.
The question is: are they worth it?
How to Measure Your Fitness
Hungry and I make goals every month in a few different categories: Personal, Hungry & Fit, Home, and Fun. This month, one of my personal goals was to create and follow a training program that would help me with the upcoming Tough Mudder we have in a month. Yeah, probably left it a little bit late to start training, but better late than never, right?! Well, as you know from being a loyal subscriber, we are both personal trainers. So in all rights, I could make myself a training plan–I’ve done it many times before. However, even trainers need trainers and I happen to be married to a pretty fantastic one. I whined about making one so he took a pad of paper and drew one up for me instead. Perks!
The first part of this training plan is measuring my fitness aka performing an assessment of sorts. Luckily, since I am a trainer and I know my away around a gym and loads of exercises, Hungry doesn’t have to stand over me and watch. It’s good to do this before and after a training program to test that program’s effectiveness. So if you’re gearing up to start a new training plan (perhaps from us), make sure to do this assessment first.
2016’s Best Pre-Workout
You might remember 2015’s Best Protein Powder and 2015’s Best Dog Food. Reviews.com has published a new study where they tested 309 different pre-workout supplements to find the best product on the market. We’ll give you the very abridged version and let you read the article here for yourself. Essentially, they used a filtration system to narrow down the big number through process of elimination. They would remove anything with banned/potentially harmful substances, then proprietary blends, then a certain amount of caffeine, then any artificial flavors/colors to figure out the cleanest product.
2015 Fitness Test with Gold’s Gym
We’re nearly two weeks into 2015 and you may or may not be on the right track. Your diet isn’t as clean as you wanted. You still haven’t signed up for that new gym membership. You’re so busy getting back to work from the holidays that you barely have time to sleep. No worries, take this fitness test as a wake up call.
Your health can’t wait because a healthy lifestyle is the key to success at home, with family, in school, at work, or wherever you go. Increased energy levels, decreased stress levels, a more functional immune system… don’t those all sound nice. Throw some well-built shoulders and a defined midsection and you’d be feeling pretty well.
As a member of Gold’s Venice, a staff member shot this my way and I must say, I think it’s great. We’ll see what you think about it after you put yourself through these ten grueling minutes of all out exercise targeting every muscle in your body. WAIT… remember, this isn’t made to be a workout, it’s made to see what kind of shape you’re in and what you need to start doing more (or less) of in your life!
The test itself is simple and self-explanatory. It’s an awesome system but I can’t say the push ups, squats, bench step ups, pull ups, and crunches will be quite as much fun.
