Join a Society of Strength

This is a post that I recently wrote for Society of Strength, a new organization trying to bring all strength sports together in one supportive group. The article is called “Defining Strength” and while you might read the post here, please visit Society of Strength after and look around! You never know what you might learn! Often I have seen individuals fall in love with powerlifting, strongman, Crossfit, and more. What’s even better is that more often that not, those individuals are not athletes but just average people who love the cooperative nature of those sports, as opposed to bodybuilding or some other disciplines that can be very lonely. Either way, your experience is what you make it! Read this and you’re already going to be one step closer to being hungry and fit!

What NASM’s Acquisition of AFAA Means Right Now

Yes, this is old news to most fitness professionals, but it came up in the office the other day and I realized that I never shared this with you! If you click on this link you will see that NASM (National Academy of Sports Medicine) and AFAA (Aerobics and Fitness Association of America) are both listed on the same screen, on AFAA’s website nonetheless. Don’t be confused, AFAA has not acquired NASM; it’s actually the other way around. On this particular page, AFAA is offering a NASM Group Personal Training Online Workshop for $129, granting 7 AFAA CEUs. Essentially, you read a bit, watch some videos, and take a quiz that you need to pass in three attempts.

How to Choose a Good Pair of Protective UV Sunglasses

This post is brought to you by Catherine Lavinia in order to help your eye health!

Many people believe that sunglasses can be just a stylish accessory. Nevertheless, there are some good reasons why they are called “protective”. Their main purpose is to protect your eyes from too bright sunlight, and most importantly – protect from the destructive action of the “invisible enemy” ultraviolet rays. How to distinguish real protective sunglasses from fake ones? Let’s try to find out.

Good Morning Meditation

It’s easy to go about our morning either dazed and confused or rushed and panicked. Then how does that make the next few hours play out? The day, even? With just five to ten minutes (even less sometimes!), you can set the right intention for the day and get into the mindset you want to be in. I find this much more preferable than the craze that our minds and therefore focus can get whipped into. So here’s a simple good morning meditation to try to do each morning and start the day right. This can be done any time of the day, but I find that the morning is great for setting the day up.

Find a comfortable seated position or laying position (if you won’t fall asleep). If you’re seated, sit up straight and tall. If you’re laying, be still and unbothered.

What Contributes to Obesity: Calories or Inactivity?

Obesity is steadily becoming a more hot topic in American, which is good because there needs to be more awareness. With more discussion, comes more debate and such. Nutritionists have one opinion, personal trainers have another, and doctors even another. We’re just glad that they all agree that it is an important issue and we need to do all we can to combat it. In this video, Hungry discusses both sides of the coin: is it how many calories you eat or is it your inactivity? Or both?

Setting Realistic Goals

If you read this post, you’ll know that I am working on some goals for this summer. I really wanted to ignite my fitness drive back up so I decided to plan out some goals to give me more motivation on working out every day. The goals are mostly body weight goals. Two goals, however, stood out a little bit: running 3 casual miles and being able to touch my toes. Along with my other goals, they just didn’t make sense. Just because they’ve been longtime goals, I wanted to throw them in my mix of body weight goals (which aren’t easy, mind you). However, with my busy work schedule and all my home hobbies and chores, I was stressing to fit everything in in one week.

Why I DO NOT Review Pre-Workout Supplements

In 2007, I started taking supplements (pre/intra/post workout) in order to increase my performance as a Division I athlete (that I was grossly unprepared for that level of competition). Although I was practically raised in fitness facilities, working out with my mother at home, playing competitive sports all day every day, I never had a real strength and conditioning or sports performance coach until college. In high school varsity sports, we hit the weight room together but there were no programs for exercise or nutrition. My sport-specific skills were top notch but I didn’t have a body that could use those skills.

Change.org Animal Cruelty Petition

First, read this.

We don’t do this often; in fact, I don’t think we have ever done this on the blog. For the past few years, we have both been subscribed to a service that allows individuals to petition just about anything online. By garnering signatures, their hope is that they can change something, using those signatures as leverage against the party they are opposing. While neither of us has ever created a petition, nor do we know anyone personally who has used the service, there have been occasions where we have signed other petitions.

In all honesty, it’s hard to know who is right, who is wrong, who is telling the truth, and who is lying. It’s based on different opinions and views of any situation. Still, it’s a relatively civilized way of trying to figure out a solution to a problem. You get the idea and you can decide for yourself what petitions you do or don’t want to sign. I, however, for some reason have decided to share this petition and ask you to consider signing it.
