Yelping is Helping (Yelp Year in Review – 2021)

Yelp! It is a platform that we’ve used for years, but have never really talked about on the blog. Why? It has always been a bit taboo, I suppose. Yelp doesn’t like their users doubling up their reviews. They see it as a conflict of interest. They have some control issues. As a result, we’ve always said no to their annual invites to be Yelp Elite. We play it safe by avoiding be too far in Yelp. Still, we love to use it for the following reason.

There are loads of Yelp users out there. Just like us, they’re people trying to find out what is open and when. They want to know if places take cash or credit. Do these spots have parking or not? It is challenging for a lot of small businesses to build and maintain websites. Even though Facebook pages are free, not everyone wants to be on social media. Not everyone is technologically savvy. We recently helped one of our favorite local cafes update their hours on Facebook. Their page still said they were closed from the pandemic.

While we don’t necessarily Yelp for us or to be cool and elite, we still really enjoy it. Especially this year, when Yelp sent this cool year in review. As you can see, our impact was probably much greater on here than any other social media platform. I don’t know how accurate it is, but the thought of helping 1.8 million people and 161 businesses is beyond my wildest dreams. For a few hours of Yelping, even helping one person find the right dinner spot for their future fiancee is worth it.

I can’t say we’re surprised that we ate more pizza, Mexican, and Middle Eastern than anything else. Pizza is in my DNA and Mexican reminds Alana of home. The Lebanese food here is incredible. We’re fortunate to have access to such great food. Cheers to another great year of eating and sharing love through food!
