A Beginner’s Guide to Counting Macros

[Please enjoy a guest article from former NFL player, Chris Gronkowski!]

Starting a new diet can be a difficult adjustment and part of the change involves becoming accustomed to a new routine and way of thinking about food. Counting calories is an accurate but sometimes challenging method for tracking what you consume each day. If your goal is to lose weight, you’ll want to record how many calories you eat and work to burn off more calories. For some people, this dieting method is tedious and easy to forget about. But those willing to stick to a strict approach may want to take it one step further and experiment with counting their macro calories.

What Is a Macro Diet?

Following a macro diet is similar to the process of counting calories but, instead, you must focus on tracking how much you consume of the three macronutrients—protein, carbohydrates and fats. One of the major benefits of counting macros is that you are compelled to consume only foods that are fueling your body in some respect. For example, if you were on a calorie-counting diet, you could eat a bag of potato chips as long as you write down the calorie count. But, with a macro-counting diet, you would want to replace the chips with a food heavier in protein, carbs or fats.

Macronutrients are vital to our body’s well-being, and they can be found in nearly every food. Most items though are classified by whichever macronutrient they have the most of—for example, beef is considered a protein even though it also contains fats. Counting macros has been a popular practice amongst athletes for many years but, as of late, people have found this method to be a beneficial way to hold themselves to healthy eating habits.

Hungry & Fit’s Go-To Healthy Snacks

Here at Hungry & Fit we eat…a lot. We have different styles, but there is always a lot of food involved. Hungry is more of the wolf-type; he will eat an inane amount of food and then be good for a while. Fit is more deer-like, grazing across the day. She eats small snacks and meals…every hour or so. So yes, a lot of food is consumed in the Hungry & Fit household. That means we have to be stacked when it comes to food options. Fit will usually gravitate toward smaller meals or snacks. It’s very important for us to have healthy snack options available at all times so we don’t go down a bad road.

5 Healthy Snacks to Have at Home

Here at the Hungry & Fit household, we know that what you put in your pantry is what you will put in your stomach. That’s why we typically don’t stock junk in the house. However, we are HUNGRY and Fit, and let me tell you, I get hungry very often. So, instead of yelling hangrily at Hungry, we always have a healthy stock of snacks at home. We go through lots of different snacks, but here are some of our favorites:

Buff Bake: Nut Butter With a Purpose

Recently, we (might have) introduced you to a product called PB Crave that offered one of the best-tasting peanut butters we ever consumed. While the focus of the product seems to be tasting good, using natural ingredients, and something even greater, it isn’t a revolution in the field of healthy peanut butters (for the body). Buff Bake has created a line of products that is trying to accomplish that level of maintaining the joy of consuming peanut-butter-like substances while increasing the level of nutrition at the same time. The result? That’s up to your taste buds

Healthy Energy to Power You Through the Summer

If the name, Kaeng Raeng, sounds familiar, it’s because we did an awesome cleanse with them (plus a giveaway) back in 2014. This was a hit with us and with you guys! We’re here to tell you about another great product coming from this great company. What I love the most about Kaeng Raeng is that they’re all about the natural. Natural ingredients, natural lifestyle, natural health. They don’t give you a magic pill to lose all your fat. These are healthy ingredients to spur a healthy lifestyle–it’s as simple as that. Now, let’s get to the new product–the Daily Green Energy.

A Fresh Way to Keep the Body Clean and Healthy

Do you think your health is connected to your drinking water? I’m guessing that you probably do since humans require a lot of water. Not all cities have access to clean water, even (or especially) big metropolitan cities. So even if you’re living in a hip town, the water coming from your very own tap could be poisoning you. There have been a lot of products to try to combat this, but not all of them work. However, there’s a new player in town backed by science and a mission. This product doesn’t focus on your waistline; it focuses on something all cleanses are supposed to do. What’s that, you say? Water Liberty developed a product called Adya Clarity that rids you of toxins and metals from your body. How? By purifying your water! We now have the power to harness clean, healthy water!

Crustless Kale Quiche

It’s one of those mornings…when you’re still eating quite healthy, feeling a little lazy, and want to have something yummy. You also need to clean out your fridge. What to do….quiche! We keep it crustless to keep the unneeded carbs and bad fats out and we throw in whatever may go bad in the following week. For our fridge, we had a whole lot of kale that I wanted to go through. Kale is a wonderful green and gives a nice texture to a quiche. You can follow my recipe, or you can use it as a base and throw what you want into it! Grab some eggs and here we go…

Blueberry Cashew Topping

We’re still eating clean for the most part over here at Hungry & Fit headquarters and that means getting creative when we have sweet tooths (teeth…). Hungry recently came up with this divine topping (or sauce) to put on breakfast or “desserts.” I was absolutely blown away when he served it to me atop a stack of Kodiak pancakes (healthy pancakes). I was like, well someone got carried away, is this still healthy? And guess what–it was! I was shocked when I learned the ingredients for this beautiful, delicious topping: blueberries and cashews were the main components. Each bite was like a slice of heaven–the cashews were just soft enough to ease into your mouth and melt while the blueberries soothed everything out. Okay, enough dreaming, let’s get to the real stuff!

Yeah, 5 minutes is accurate! As you are frying up those pancakes, heating up those waffles, scooping that froyo, heat this up in a pan! You and your family will be thanking me this weekend. It’s an easy way to trick the kids into liking something healthy! It’s a perfect weekend breakfast addition. It’s easy and anyone with a heat source and a pot can make it. It also isn’t too sweet. I’m not a fan of most pancake toppings because there’s way too much sugar. This balance is absolutely wonderful. Make this recipe to stay hungry and fit!
