Why a Gym Should NOT Have Sales Staff!

Today, we released a lengthy video on YouTube, which you can watch HERE. In this video, we discussed why a gym doesn’t need a team dedicated to sales. We felt the same way before covid made a huge impact on the world, so please don’t think this was motivated simply from the economic changes in the past few months.

While we encourage you to watch the video, especially if you work in a gym, own a gym, or especially if you are a manager at a gym, here are the cliff notes.

Every person who works in a gym, regardless of their specialty, should have some knowledge of every operation within the facility. They should all be certified in First Aid, CPR, and using an AED. Every staff should all know how to act during emergencies. Also, team members need to know what is where. While the custodian might not need to explain the exercise science to a member, it is so important that everyone can speak confidently and comfortably about everything inside their workplace.

Again, this does not mean that they need to have certifications or a formal education in multiple areas, but during challenging times, it helps for a director to know how to clean vomit off the bathroom floor. I was in that position many times. Here are some details. A child throws up in the bathroom after a basketball game. The parents tell the front desk. The front desk can’t leave their post so they call the janitor. The janitor is nowhere to be found because they’re busy elsewhere and the vomit is starting to dry, and smell really bad. Rather than letting it sit there, the director can either watch the front desk while they go back to clean it, or just clean it themselves. The director needs to know where the materials are and how to sanitize it properly for OSHA standards, especially if there is any blood. I think you get the idea.

Investing in and training your staff almost always works in your favor, as a manager, if you do a good job taking care of them and retaining them. Give them the opportunity to learn and grow. If you have a team that focuses on sales, let them learn how to look after equipment logs. That way, when they’re not dealing with sales, they can still be active. Let us know if you have questions. Let our experience help you!

Stay hungry and fit!
