There is no better feeling than having a half dozen pints of ice cream delivered to your door, especially when you live in New Orleans. With weeks of heat indexes over 110 degrees in our foreseeable future, we need refreshing treats to make it through the hard times. While I love the fatty goodness in Haagen Dazs, I can only eat so much of their coffee ice cream before bed. (I didn’t need to look up how to spell their name, I just know because I eat that much ice cream.) While a pint of Americone Dream by Ben & Jerry’s is my go-to cheat meal, it isn’t really ice cream. (It’s more of a sundae in a pint.) With trends pushing towards healthier options, there hasn’t been a lot of innovation for pure ice cream eaters that are willing to ignore counting calories, in order to consume that which tastes the best. Le Cafe Eblouir (Gretna, LA)
Hungry & Fit are typically on the wrong side of the Mississippi River when it comes to the fun, cute places to hang out and eat. New Orleans and even Metairie have most of those spots, with a few exceptions in Algiers. Fortunately, earlier this year, we received a covid-related blessing in disguise. A local pastry chef, who had worked in hotels, decided to open up her own cafe instead of fighting to find a job in the recently unpredictable hospitality industry. Feast your eyes on the treats inside Le Cafe Eblouir!

Curried Egg Salad Sandwiches
The final piece of our Downton Abbey party is here…the curried egg salad sandwiches! This one is the one I got most creative (aka deviated from the recipe found here: The Unofficial Downton Abbey Cookbook, Revised Edition: From Lady Mary’s Crab Canapes to Daisy’s Mousse au Chocolat–More Than 150 Recipes from Upstairs and Downstairs (Unofficial Cookbook) ) with. These were also Hungry’s favorite! The eggs and the curry make a wonderful pair. The mayo gives it that creaminess that you just sink your teeth into. All together, it’s an unbeatable sandwich. This one, if not the others, will be a repeat I make very often. Let’s get to it.
Proper English Cucumber Sandwiches
There’s no food quite like Cucumber Sandwiches to make you feel like you’re having a proper tea time (except, perhaps, tea). They’re dainty, delicate, mild, but better yet, delicious. They want to make you drink tea, lift your pinkie, and wear a fancy hat. To go along with our Downton Abbey themed get-together where we also had raspberry meringue pie, a summer salad, and egg curry sandwiches, we of course had to feature cucumber sandwiches! I took this recipe right from the The Unofficial Downton Abbey Cookbook: From Lady Mary’s Crab Canapes to Mrs. Patmore’s Christmas Pudding – More Than 150 Recipes from Upstairs and Downstairs (Unofficial Cookbook) and boy did it serve us well. This is the perfect bite to satisfy any party, tea or not! There are definitely substitutions that can be made to make it even healthier.
Chado Tea Room
My Nana passed away a little over a year ago and I wanted to celebrate her somehow. So, I started looking up places where the family could have high tea. After searching around a bit, I found Chado Tea. It was close by (we went to the Hollywood location), didn’t seem too pricey, and had good reviews. You may have seen some pictures from there in an earlier post. All in all, it was a good and fun experience.
