International Day of the Girl is Every Day!

International Day of the Girl was October 11, 2019. But we’re here to say that every day should be day of the girl! Let’s make the next DECADE of the girl. We’re so inspired by the achievements of women and girls across the world.

Just recently, Time Magazine named the entire United States Women’s National Soccer Team as their “Athlete of the Year.” They couldn’t just pick one of them, so they named the entire team. This team just recently won the Women’s World Cup, but it was so much more than that. They used their win as a platform to demand more money for women’s sports. They could’ve rested with their medals and trophies, but they championed for women’s rights instead.

Hungry’s New Morning Routine

Who wakes up before 8 am? Who wakes up before 7 am? 6 am? How about 5 am? I know that we have readers of all ages on the blog, and while everyone is unique, there are certain populations who tend to sleep in more than others. For as long as we’ve been together, our alarms are usually set for 5:30 am. We like to walk Noke before other people are outside and get our day started. Recently, a few changes have led me to set that alarm an hour earlier.

I’ve been waking up at 4:30 am.

Building Hamstrings

We don’t often repost content from other sources, but sometimes, we come across an article that is presented in a manner that we find very easy to digest. While we’d never heard of Stack as a media source before, every week, I receive newsletters from the American Swimming Coaches Association, with important articles relevant to swimming. Sometimes, I don’t even read through them, but this headline caught my eye: 4 Simple Ways to Build Stronger, More Resilient Hamstrings.

5 Self-Defense Tactics That Everyone Should Learn

Please enjoy a guest post from Albert Guardado Jr. from Combat Brands. We believe self-defense is vital for each and every person.

No one likes to think about the idea of being attacked, but the reality is that, according to the FBI, a violent crime is committed every 26.3 seconds in America, with one aggravated assault every 41.3 seconds. These numbers aren’t intended to scare you — though they are indeed alarming — but should instead help you understand why preparation and vigilance are vital in our sometimes threatening world.

One of the simplest ways to conquer a frightening situation is to learn some key self-defense tactics that you can file away in your mental rolodex if a situation should arise.

Getting Ready to Get in Shape This Autumn

For many people, the summer is the most active season, thanks to time off from work, days at the beach, and a diet that’s more full of fresh fruit and vegetables. However, for many people, especially those in warmer climates, the summer can be too hot to work out as often as they would like to, especially if their workout of choice is running in the great outdoors or playing sports outside. Luckily, now that the fall season is approaching, the weather is often just right for working out. Are you ready to get in shape this autumn?

Stop Being Ashamed of Your Cellulite

ATTENTION MOST WOMEN, SOME MEN: STOP BEING ASHAMED OF YOUR CELLULITE.

Our society has many body-shaming problems and a big one is cellulite. Yes, cellulite, that dimpling of the skin in fattier areas. Guess what, it doesn’t mean you have a bad body, are fat, or that you need to do anything about it. Women, mostly, are ashamed to have it, yet 90% of women have it! It’s yet another impossible societal standard that people are kept to. And guess what, it’s nearly impossible to remove because it’s so natural to how our cells are formed. I am so sick of people (especially women) being embarrassed of it. Perfectly fit people have it–I have it! 90% of women!

Be the Wonder Woman for all women! Stop caring about cellulite!

The Best Gym in LA!

There are more fitness facilities in LA than anyone would ever want to count. When I managed a very large fitness facility in West Los Angeles, we had dozens of significant competitors in walking distance. It was brutal and trying to offer the same classes that these specialized locations hosted was a massive challenge. With such an impressive selection, there isn’t ever going to be a consensus best “gym in LA” or anything along those lines, but there are certainly places that are undisputed gems.

We’ve talked about, on the blog or in person, some of the best deals in LA. Whether that means off-the-wall places like Tempest, amazing communities such as Barbell Brigade, cost-free natural selections including the Santa Monica Rings/Runyon Canyon or the unmatched intensity you’ll find at Gold’s Venice, LA has something for everyone. As Hungry & Fit, we do, however, need to give an edge to the facility that we personally use. Obviously, that says a lot about a place.

Since we do fairly well and are fiscally responsible, we don’t limit ourselves to budget options/chains including 24 Hour Fitness, LA Fitness, Planet Fitness and the YMCA (though we do love the Y!). We prefer to pay more and avoid dealing with people who aren’t serious about their training; we don’t want to fight people who are on their phone while sitting on equipment. Also, we like to avoid budget options since they often have higher traffic; we don’t want to wait for equipment, in order to keep our workout intensity higher.

How to Keep Up Your Workout Routine When Traveling (MOTIVATION!)

This doesn’t include one of our notorious hotel workouts. This doesn’t have a ton of exercises and numbers. You won’t find any programming here: No sets, reps, rest, etc. This is strictly motivational and completely intended to help you remember that you can make up as many excuses as you want, but you can also take them away. It is all on you.

How to Measure Your Fitness

Hungry and I make goals every month in a few different categories: Personal, Hungry & Fit, Home, and Fun. This month, one of my personal goals was to create and follow a training program that would help me with the upcoming Tough Mudder we have in a month. Yeah, probably left it a little bit late to start training, but better late than never, right?! Well, as you know from being a loyal subscriber, we are both personal trainers. So in all rights, I could make myself a training plan–I’ve done it many times before. However, even trainers need trainers and I happen to be married to a pretty fantastic one. I whined about making one so he took a pad of paper and drew one up for me instead. Perks!

The first part of this training plan is measuring my fitness aka performing an assessment of sorts. Luckily, since I am a trainer and I know my away around a gym and loads of exercises, Hungry doesn’t have to stand over me and watch. It’s good to do this before and after a training program to test that program’s effectiveness. So if you’re gearing up to start a new training plan (perhaps from us), make sure to do this assessment first.

July 4th Workout

As you’re thinking of your afternoon barbecue, you mull over maybe getting a workout in before you stuff yourself like there’s no tomorrow. However, most gyms are closed today as it is a national holiday. But that never stopped you, right? No gym? No problem. No equipment? No problem. We have created a 7/4 (or July 4th) workout for you to do wherever–at home, at the park, at the beach, at the patio before you eat that burger, etc. In the spirit of 7/4, it’s:

7 exercises

30 seconds each

4 rounds
