We Moved to New Orleans!

If you haven’t noticed through our social media, we moved to New Orleans! We are now home owners! It’s been a wild five months; we’ve experienced a hurricane, fostered a pregnant dog, painted a whole house, just to name a few.

Why leave Los Angeles? Well, we’d been ready to leave Los Angeles for quite some time. Although we had family there, we didn’t really fit into the lifestyle anymore. Los Angeles is incredibly expensive and it doesn’t fit well into the simple monthly budget template we set up. In all actuality, it doesn’t make much sense to live there unless you’re part of the entertainment industry. It’s a real grind and traffic is a pill. We wanted to slow down a bit, collect some more savings before we made the big trip across the pond to New Zealand.

Living in Hollywood (A Fun Recap of Our Adventures)

For the first time, in a very long time, Hungry & Fit will live somewhere for more than a year. After heading to college in 2007, Hungry hadn’t stayed in a single place for more than a year. Sometimes those moves would just be from one room to another in the same building, but once Hungry & Fit teamed up, we’ve had some much more distinct moves. After leaving New York in May of 2012, with a car packed with nearly everything we owned, we settled in Boulder, Colorado. This is when our string of moving into new apartments after one-year leases began.

Tight Hamstrings? Try This

I would think it’s fairly accurate to say that many people struggle with tight hamstrings (those are the muscles on the rear side of your leg near the top). There’s a well-known secret that I can’t even touch my toes! Sure, we can blame it on genetics (that’s what I like to do) and that may indeed be part of the problem, but the other part is lack of stretching. Can you remember the last time you stretched? If so, great! Was it a good enough time devoted to stretching each part of your body? Probably not, unless you took a yoga class not based on strength.

People, if they don’t ignore stretching completely, will only stretch for a short period of time. Maybe a quick swing of the arms or a grasp towards the toes. People think it’s a waste of time and that if they’re working out, they should focus on calorie-burning or strength-building, none of this stretching nonsense. Well, guess what–it’s absolutely not a waste of time. Stretching, becoming limber, and flexible will help you in any sport, any exercise, any movement. Also, stretching shouldn’t be easy (you’ll see Hungry’s pained face below). Let’s start off with a deep hamstring stretch–all you need is a wall:

Wake Up with a Walking Meditation

Hooray, another “mental health” post! While we are obviously “physical” fitness trainers, we know that without the mental part, you haven’t got much. Today, we bring you a walking meditation. What is a walking meditation, you say? Well, it’s rather simple–you meditate while walking. These doesn’t mean your humming “om” to yourself while walking blind down the street. It’s more about leaving your own concerns about yourself behind and simply become an observer and a sponge. You take everything in while simple taking step after step. You listen to your breath, you listen to the birds, you feel the wind, you see the sun rising, and so forth. This exercise can be incredibly rewarding while also saving time. If you have a dog, I hope someone in your household walks it every morning. This can be done with your dog! Let’s get started. And if you think you can master the walking meditation, consider running, but first check out Nicer Shoes for their comparison between the two activities.
