Fit’s Favorite Blogs

The blogging community is a wonderful, supportive community. We started six years ago (wow!) and boy has it changed since. Back then, there weren’t many “social media influencers” and Instagram was barely a thing. It was much easier for bloggers because the market wasn’t flooded with them. People blog as a full-time gig now and they have to work hard to stay on top of things like SEO, market changes, and outreach. But still, it’s mostly a great community where bloggers support one another. For better or for worse, Hungry & Fit is still around to throw food and workouts at you. We wanted to take a moment and share with you blogs that inspired us to blog and also ones we have recently followed. Some are food blogs, some are health blogs, some are somewhere in between like us.

5 Things You Should do to Start CrossFit

CrossFit is a popular fitness regimen that’s been all the rage with people of all ages over the past few years. It’s a workout routine that promotes fitness by doing functional movements at high intensity. It helps improve your overall health, as well as your posture, strength, flexibility, and balance.

If you want to start with your CrossFit journey, you’re in the right place. You can get tips from CrossFitSurvival.com about the basics. Furthermore, here’s an article about 5 things you should do to jump start your journey:

  1. Find the right gym

Perhaps the first thing you need to do is find a local gym you can attend. Luckily, CrossFit is already very popular so you wouldn’t have a hard time looking for a good box to train in. When you’re looking for a gym, apart from the location consider also the size of the place, the availability of coaches, and of course the membership cost.

On your first visit, take note of who accommodates you and how they welcome you. First impressions are important as you’ll be spending a lot of your time there eventually. If you get to meet a coach, it’s nice to be able to discuss about your goals and how you can achieve them. Even without committing to a gym, a CrossFit box should have coaches that are approachable and concerned about its trainees.

  1. Invest in proper apparel

In order for you to make the most out of your movements, wearing proper clothes is important. It helps you move around comfortably and supports you so that you don’t get injured. Wear sturdy training shoes because you’ll be doing a lot of short sprints and jumps. There are flat-footed crossFit shoes that are designed to support your feet as you rep out double-unders, rope climbs, and box jumps.

Your choice of tee also matters. Make sure it’s breathable, quick-dry, light, and comfortable to allow for maximum movement. You don’t want tight sleeves ruining your snatch. Case in point, you have to be very comfy in your clothes. For your bottoms, it’s advisable to wear compression pants or cycling shorts because they’re light and flexible. Avoid wide leg shorts that would ride down to your thighs when you do a handstand, or expose your undies when you lunge.

  1. Make time for it

Just like any fitness journey, crossFit requires your time. Show up at the gym at least 3 times a week and see how your body improves. Discipline is key in making this work. No matter how much you prepare for it, if you’re not ready to put your mind into it, you will not see results. On your first few weeks in the gym, try to learn how to do the moves properly and get coaching on your body form. As you go along, you can do the WODs (workout of the day) with minimal supervision and come in at your own time.

  1. Eat a balanced diet

As they say, your workout is only as good as your next meal. Eating a balanced diet ensures that you are ready for your next physical activity. A balanced meal typically involves 2000 to 2500 calories per day. Plan your meals and make sure you’re getting proper nourishment. Half of your plate should be filled with fruits and green leafy vegetables, ¼ for protein, and the other ¼ for grains.

  1. Document your journey

There’s nothing wrong with snapping pictures to show your progress. It’s not bragging as long as your intentions are clear. Progress photos are inspiring. And yours is another inspiring tale waiting to be told. Track your progress by means of a fitness calendar or an app on your phone. Record you original weight, your goal weight, the food you eat, and the number of times you go to the gym. Carry a fitness journal with you to help you track your progress.

How Psychology Can Help You Learn to Love Exercise

Whether you’re a student, parent or a busy professional – you can benefit from exercise. For those who have trouble getting motivated, you need to change the way that you think about the activity.

For some, exercising comes effortlessly. While most people realize that working out is healthy for your mind and body, for many, exercise is not a part of their daily life. For this class of fitness hopefuls, tricking the mind into new behavior may prove beneficial. By adjusting your attitude toward exercise you can overcome challenges and experience remarkable breakthroughs.

Intuitively, most people view exercising as a chore. This mindset makes it very easy to bypass a productive workout session. The trick, report researchers, is to make your mind think of exercise as a reward rather than a chore.

Our First YouTube Video Intro

Now that you’ve given us those 30 seconds of your life (thank you for that), we have to be the first to say that we’re not entirely happy with this intro for a few reasons. First of all, it isn’t anywhere near as inspiring or telling of what we do, as we’d like it to be. Second, and more importantly, it doesn’t highlight the both of us, but we really could only find footage of one of us!

Aloha Poke Co Review (Chicago)

We’re not Hawaiian, but as you’ve seen on the blog, we’ve spent some time there and Hungry is a huge fan of Hawaiian food. Why? The answer is simple. Hawaiian food screams love and spreads the aloha spirit. Hawaiian food embraces the mana of the islands, from the mighty volcanoes to the powerful yet serene oceans. Every time you grab a plate of loco moco from the local family restaurant, or a pile of pancakes covered in lilikoi and macadamia nuts from the town’s diner, you want to throw up the shaka as you walk out the door. There is just something magical about the Hawaiian culture because of the loving people that you’ll find there.

Our Honeymoon in Ireland

You may have noticed that we have been absent for a good bit here on the blog. However, if you follow any of our social media accounts, you would know it was because we were honeymooning in Ireland! Yes, we got married two years ago, but a late honeymoon is better than a non-existent one, wouldn’t you say? We had a 16-hour layover in Iceland since we flew WOW Air (more to come on that airline later), so we got to explore Keflavik very briefly. Then we were back on the plane, sleep-deprived and body-confused, and arrived in Dublin in the morning. Look at our map below to see our exact route–starting in Dublin and going north then counter-clockwise the WHOLE island. We’ll share with you pictures for now based on each location (of course we can’t show every little place, we did lots of driving and saw lots of things!), we hope you enjoy!

Alternate Nostril Breathing: An Easy Way Into Meditation

Meditation can seem quite a daunting thing. Sitting still for many long minutes and trying to quiet the mind? Good luck! However, if you break it down piece by piece and just try doing one thing, it can eventually lead you to the real deal. Just trying this breathing technique here or that thought pattern there can ease you into a meditation practice. It doesn’t need to be this scary thing. You don’t need to become someone who sits in the middle of a forest, surviving on meditative breath alone. That’s why, if I’m teaching a meditation class, I like to start with something simple like the alternate nostril breathing (which I’ve blogged about before).

So what is alternate nostril breathing? It’s really rather simple. The technique requires the use of your fingers so that you can breathe through one nostril at a time. Why is it effective? By doing something active with your breath (especially active due to the use of your fingers), your mind has to focus on it. Your mind has a much better chance of focusing if you are doing something active with it. Instead of sitting there, hoping that the buzz of your thoughts will quiet, you are taking your breaths with purpose. So, let’s get started–you only need a handful of minutes.

How to Use Yelp

There’s a good chance that the only time you’ve heard about Yelp, it didn’t help you build trust in their brand. They’ve had a ton of bad publicity and we’ve actually had plenty of negative experiences with them, but let’s focus on the positive. Here in LA, Jonathan Gold’s 101 list is the “gold standard” for where to eat. LA Weekly just came out with a 99 Essential Restaurant list, and we can’t help but think that whoever compiled that list was GREATLY influenced by Gold. Sadly, even here in LA, very few people outside of the food industry know who he is.

It can be hard to find good places to eat and most people aren’t willing to do a ton of research. They don’t want to Google “best food critic in LA” and then read through Gold’s hundreds of reviews over the year. Instead, we look for more convenient options. Whether it is a reflection of our laziness or desire to save time, services that compile reviews have become extremely popular. Rotten Tomatoes is a great resource for movies, Amazon for consumer goods and Metacritic for video games. While Yelp is far from a household name, it does provide that similar service for businesses… especially places to eat!

There are two ways to use Yelp. You can either check out reviews as a guest or you can become a user and review businesses. Technically, a third way exists, as a business owner but we’re not going that direction today. As a guest, you can quickly type in “sushi” in New York and get an idea where the restaurant is, how much it costs, when it is open and what the population thinks about the food. While we don’t necessarily agree with the aggregate scores of certain places, and while we don’t necessarily trust Yelp’s filter, you’re much better off using Yelp than just walking into the first place you see.
