Mac n Cheese Will Never Be the Same

It’s like an episode of Chopped. Why would you transform a perfectly delicious and prepared food into an ingredient of another dish? More importantly, how would you do it? Obviously, because you can and it makes the other dish THAT much more enjoyable. Halfpops are a delicious snack that are far more provocative to eat than popcorn with that additional textural crunch. What’s even better is that these little bites (which remind me of a Peruvian choclo corn) have more flavor than your standard popcorn, but don’t achieve that by sacrificing your health or your waistline.

So now, we look at macaroni and cheese, arguably the greatest food ever. While most enjoy it out of the box with a flavor packet (and there is nothing wrong with that), it is becoming elevated more often and served in fine restaurants for the same price as a steak. A prime example would be a lobster mac. We all know that the key component has always been a rich and creamy cheese sauce, but more attention is slowly being given to the baked breadcrumb or panko crust.

Well, let’s just blow this whole textural concept out of the water and take it to another level. Enter the already mentioned Halfpops. While making your famous mac n’ cheese recipe, toast some half pops on low heat and make sure they don’t burn. You can use the aged cheddar, chipotle, or sea salt. I’d recommend saving the caramel ones for dessert. As soon as you’ve finished your mac, serve with a bowl of toasted Halfpops and allow each diner to choose how much crunch they want. I’ve gotten to the point where I want at least two bits of crunchy delight in each mouthful, but I’ll leave that part up to you because making decisions on how to eat your mac n’ cheese might make the different in you staying hungry and fit!

A Normal Person’s Normal Day of Eating

We’re all human, far from perfect and susceptible to bad decisions. Yesterday, I had one of those truly mortal moments when at the end of a relatively clean day of eating, I lost it… all. As a result, I thought I would share in a somewhat educational and somewhat comedic way, what my day of caloric consumption looked like.

A Luxury Prosecco You Can Actually Afford

If you’re like us, you’re on a budget. You can’t just buy whatever your heart desires, otherwise, you might find yourself in some serious debt. If you’re doubly smart, you’re even saving money, too! That requires a stricter budget. But you know us, even if we’re being frugal, we are still having fun whether it be going on an adventure, saving up for a Disneyland trip, or treating ourselves to some yummy food and drink. We do this in ways that we can actually afford them–affordable luxuries you may call them. I feel very lucky to be able to add one more to that list! Meet VOVETI Prosecco, a drink way fancier than me, but one that I can actually afford.

The Carving Board

Whenever we move to a new place, it’s fun for us to explore new eateries around us. We have certainly not failed that mission, eating at all different kind of joints: Indian, Thai, American, English, and so forth. Settled in a West Hollywood strip mall with many other food choices, the Carving Board offers a variety of American plates; salads, soups, and sandwiches. I would say it specializes in sandwiches, but we’ve tried all the different types of fares. While it may be a little overpriced, the Carving Board is a regular stop for us.

A Guide to a Proper English Breakfast

It seems to me that there is nothing better in the morning than a nice English breakfast (can substitute for Irish or Kiwi, too). It’s nutritious, satisfying, and joy-giving. A lot of people go to pubs and English/Irish cafes in order to get a good English breakfast. Little do they know, you can actually make your own English breakfast at home for half the price! We’re here to show you how. How is an English breakfast different than an American one? The main reason is that English breakfasts have much less of a sweet component than American breakfasts. Often with American breakfasts, you’ll see pancakes or french toast or something similar. The English breakfast is full of savory notes that all mix together. My version is probably definitely not textbook as it is heavily influenced by New Zealand–nonetheless, it is delicious.

Pumpkin Rice Krispie Treats

Tis the season to eat pumpkin, fa la la la la la la la la! Great song, don’t you think? For real, though, pumpkin is the star of Fall and I dare anyone to challenge that. It’s in everything you see during these few months: lattes, desserts, candles, candies, and so on and so forth. And guess what? I don’t hate it! There isn’t anything wrong with some pumpkin. I’m all for things that make each season feel like it stands out, and pumpkin really helps that with Autumn. As a side note, my New Zealand family is always shocked that Americans don’t eat pumpkin year round as they do. It’s a great vegetable! Kiwis will often have 5-6 vegetables in their dinner and pumpkin is a big part of that. Anyways, we’re using pumpkin less as a vegetable today, and more as a Fall-like way to spice up your dessert! This recipe is inspired by the Kitchn. Tuck in!

Healthy Halloween Snack

PUMPKIN SEEDS. Yup. I know that you’re probably chock full of unhealthy Halloween treats like candy, pumpkin-flavored sugar bombs, and things that are weighing you down. So in between your sugar comas, try making this healthy Halloween snack: toasted pumpkin seeds. Plus, it’s incredibly easy. Takes almost no effort and the time is just in the baking of the seeds. Pumpkin seeds have a good amount of protein per ounce!

A Pizza Revolution: Pieology vs Pizza Rev

It might not have been Subway, but it seems that the sandwich juggernaut gets the credit for redefining the fast food experience. That extra amount of ownership that you have over the finished product because you had more of a, say, than normal in the constructive process brings you back for more. Chipotle is the latest company to turn billions of dollars from this consumer experience and while small poke shops are barely keeping their head above water doing the same, the dream remains for chefs and entrepreneurs. They’re looking for the perfect food for an untrained chef to put together lunch-lady style. This food would have to be easy to assemble, use inexpensive ingredients, and popular. Was anyone else thinking of pizza?

Chocolate Chip Cookies Recipe

Yes, this is Hungry and Fit. But sometimes, it can just be Hungry and not Fit. This is the case with this recipe. It’s not too bad, just a lot of butter, but not a copious amount of sugar. As you know, we recently moved and I wanted to test out the oven (the oven at our old place was awful). So I knew what Hungry would want…some good old fashion chocolate chip cookies. So after a little searching, I found the perfect chocolate chip cookies recipe. Soft, light, and gooey. Excuse me, I’m drooling. Eat up!!

No-Bake Chocolate Mousse Cake (Vegan)

This weekend, I was lucky enough to have a playdate with my two friends who are married. Besides stuffing me like a little piggy with delicious food, we also got to make it from scratch! This was alongside a marathon of Once Upon a Time season 4 that just got uploaded to Netflix! Can you say a good Saturday? Heck yeah. One of my friends is a vegan (mostly) and she had been talking about this vegan cake forever. I was finally getting my chance to make, and more importantly taste it! The one, the only no-bake chocolate mousse cake! She goes off of this recipe.

This recipe may seem intimidating, but I can honestly tell you that it was over before I knew it. A food processor certainly helps, though! Close your eyes. Imagine a velvety, smooth mousse atop a nutty-chocolate crust. And then after, imagine no guilt, but instead feeling the healthy fats helping your body thrive! Yep, ladies and gentlemen–a HEALTHY chocolate cake. And doesn’t it feel rather warm out? I’d say so. Guess what: this recipe is a NO-BAKE recipe! Thank goodness! The oven always gets our apartment cooking. So take some time today, make this cake for a special someone, and don’t tell them how healthy it us until after they eat it! And then thank my friend for sharing this recipe with me.
