When we were recently house hunting in Louisiana, we drove through the state capital of Baton Rouge. With a population of 1/4 million and the home to LSU’s ~30,000 students, you’d imagine the food between New Orleans and Lafayette (the heart of Cajun country) would be pretty good. It is. Unfortunately, there are a lot of very popular and extremely busy seafood restaurants and when you’re traveling, you don’t have time to wait for an hour or two. We didn’t even have enough time to find parking for those spots. After checking Yelp, we headed to the more historic downtown area, easily found a free parking spot in front of a beautiful church and walked in Milford’s on Third.
It was empty inside, although a few people were enjoying their meals outside. It is a quick stop sandwich shop that offers a huge selection of sides and drinks. The sides range from chips to fresh fruit and yogurt, while the drinks range from higher end sodas to healthy electrolyte filled options. As you can see in our photos, we couldn’t resist some sweet tea and Zapp’s Voodoo chips, which are my favorite chip in the world. With quick and friendly service, we immediately and easily ordered. I had to get the signature sandwich, which was essentially a reuben, while Alana had a tuna melt.
The food came out fast and was not only packed with flavor, but also a tremendous value with relatively low prices and large portion sizes. The tuna melt was absolutely massive. You wouldn’t be surprised to discover that the pastrami on my sandwich was top of the line. The whole grain mustard gave it some acidity and heat, while the cheese added some richness. All of that crammed in between two pieces of fresh marble rye and I was a very happy customer. The obviously homemade pickles had a nice kick of heat to add to their salty nature.
Afterwards, we cleaned up our table and headed into the very fancy attached hotel to wash our hands. It was one of the most outrageously ornate bathrooms I’ve ever been in. If you’re heading through Baton Rouge and a big sandwich fan, we highly recommend Milford’s on Third. We couldn’t really find any faults with our experience there. Stay hungry and fit!
I definitely want to take y’all out for lunch at Milford’s on 3rd in Baton Rouge – yum!
