We were out to dinner at Dune (review coming soon) with our videographer when the snow-cone looking logo caught our eyes. Everyone knew that dessert was across the street, but we had no idea just how good it would be. We’d never heard of Wanderlust, but we wish that we had sooner! The server quickly explained that the flavors were inspired by places the owners have been and others they want to visit–all over the world. Well, a few of the spots were ones that we’ve been to (Cafe du monde, for example) and a few others were ones that we’re going to soon (Ireland, Iceland) so there was an immediate connection that was thrilling. Plus, our videographer (Juan Esguerra, Iron Fortitude Media) is from the Philippines, and the server told us the owner was too, so even more bonus points. But who cares about all that… get to the ice cream!
First, I have to acknowledge just how amazing the cones were. I had a few cones (don’t judge me) and both the ube and vanilla are packed with flavor. They’re the perfect texture, fresh but not overcooked, pliable but far from fragile. Also, no leakage of ice cream through the cone.
Second, all of the four ice creams that I had were well-prepared. That is, no ice crystals, no broken bases… just creamy and rich ice cream. And, that needs to be praised considering the fact that all these ice creams are incredibly unique. The Irish one has brown butter and whiskey, and while I couldn’t taste the whiskey (must be my Irish blood), my wife absolutely could. It was mostly sweet, with a little bitterness (in a good way) and a little kick! The Cafe du monde was unreal. I love a strong coffee ice cream, and if you’ve had the chicory coffee in New Orleans, you know how pronounced that flavor is! While the cafe du monde wasn’t much more complex than just coffee, I loved it how it was. The ube ice cream was probably my least favorite, but still well made.
We loved this place so much that we came back for one of their specials–a flight around the world! It’s 14 mini-cones filled with different flavors that you get to choose–basically an incredible sampling of their flavors for $30. Hungry decided to “Race Around the World” by eating their flight as quickly as possible. You can watch Hungry do that about that by clicking HERE! Eating 14 mini cones was not easy, especially without water and knowing the best way to tackle the challenge. Hungry’s mouth was actually damaged for a week after, but he’d definitely try it again! Eating 14 ice cream cones as fast as possible might not help with your caloric deficits, but going on adventures can help you stay hungry and fit!
