Should I Set Monthly Goals?

Should you set monthly goals? That is entirely up to you! But we have set monthly goals, for the past few years, and whether it’s helped us accomplish more or not, we’re always looking forward to setting goals for the next month. We aim to do so on the first of the month, but sometimes time can get away from us. We never like to on the last of the month before because there’s always time to complete a goal and you can never give up on yourself.

For the longest time, we set goals just for ourselves. I think we started with four a month. Eventually we added goals for Hungry & Fit, and then even for our home. Home goals can be repairs, renovations or even servicing your car. We decided to finally try to bring some balance to our overachieving selves by adding a “FUN” column to the list and ending up where we are today by making five goals for each of the five categories. Twenty-five goals a month. It makes a small impact on the dynamic around here, but it holds us accountable more than anything else.

Now, we don’t have a system that punishes or rewards us based on how many goals we achieve. That could be something that happens in the future, but right now we’re not that serious. It’s enticing, but let’s consider how well we did in May, now that we’re a few days into June. We generally look at it in three ways; complete success, failure or the need to change the goal… redirection, if you will.

In terms of complete success… Well, we exceeded our blog revenue goal. We came in at nearly 113%. Whenever we complete a goal, we put an “X” over the goal on our sheet that looks just like a bingo board. In terms of redirection… while working on our cookbook, decided to go in a few directions with a few different books. We’re going to really dig into the first one this month. In terms of failure… I completely lost a great opportunity to go Florida at less than half of the normal price. Thus, I failed to plan my trip to Florida, which was a very clear goal.

Those are only a few of the goals that we set for the month, but probably the clearest examples. When creating our June goals, we took the ones that we failed, but still need to complete and wrote them at the top of the list with a big star next to them. We can’t let a goal be missed for two straight months, since they’re normally relatively important. Are you goal setters?
