Our 1000th Post!

On August 14th, 2012, we arrived in Boulder, Colorado with nothing but a 1998 Ford Taurus filled with everything we owned. We didn’t have jobs, a place to live, or money… but we had each other and decided that would be enough to make it. After loading up our credit cards and with student loans of over $50,000 we decided that the best place to go was the Boulder Public Library. Fortunately, we found jobs relatively fast, even though we both were hired as part-time hourly staff.

We finally found an apartment, but we couldn’t furnish it, so we pulled a futon from the dumpster and slept on that for months. Eventually, when we felt comfortable enough, we adopted Nymeria and Misty, and everything else is history! Over four and a half years later, you’ve followed our journey through 1000 posts on this blog! What started as a “personal blog” turned into a “food and fitness blog” that sat under Hungry & Fit LLC.

How Inpatient Rehab is More Effective Than Outpatient Rehab

When a person becomes an addict, his or her life takes a full 180 degrees turn. And because stopping can be difficult, getting into rehab is the best option. It’s the start of the recovery process.

There are mainly two types of rehab: inpatient and outpatient. With inpatient rehab, you reside or check-in to a rehab facility while you are being treated. What happens is that you basically stop whatever you are doing with your life and just do rehab. With outpatient rehab, you live at home, outside of rehab, once the treatment hours are over. You go on with your life, work or school, and other responsibilities, but you spend a certain amount of time in rehab. This typically includes group meetings, individual or family counseling, and various therapy sessions.

Healthy Oatmeal Raisin Chia Cookies

I’ve been wanting to make some good oatmeal raisin cookies for a while now since we had some raisins in the pantry. After a recipe fail with some protein cookies, I was determined to make a great batch of cookies! After looking around the Internet for some inspiration, I stumbled upon this recipe and knew it was the one to base mine off of. Her recipe had flax seeds in it, but since Hungry is allergic to flax, I used chia seeds instead. This helped the cookies have a great texture and a good extra dose of protein. These oatmeal raisin chia cookies are healthy AND delicious! There is not much sugar in these, so no guilt necessary.

Universal Studios: What to Do and Not to Do

I challenged myself to write ten Yelp reviews a day… until I have no more reviews to write. The suggestions are based on your activity history and I’ve stumbled upon a time that I decided to check-in to everything that I went to at Universal one day. Well, it’s a lot of rides and food stands, etc. and it got me into thinking, why don’t we give some tips for Universal because… everything is good if you play your cards right. BUT it can be one tough day if you don’t make the right moves.

Here are some tips to make the most out of your visit.

How to Balance Exercise with Work

Having a full-time job (does that ever actually mean only 40 hours a week?) and getting the proper amount of exercise in your week often don’t quite match up. Most times, the job gets the better of you and you either don’t have enough time in the morning or you’re too exhausted after work to get one in. We’d much rather plomp down on the couch than find some shred of willpower to get our body moving. We partnered with Quill to bring you this helpful infographic which shows you how to get exercise even with a hectic work schedule. If you click on it, there’s also a great article about it on their website.
