Why Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner Don’t Exist Anymore
Breakfast, lunch, and dinner don’t exist anymore. Well, at least not in the world of fitness, or within more specific niches and communities in that world. Allow me to explain how I came to this conclusion. But before that, allow me to say this. I don’t plan or prep meals 99% of the time. I have been fortunate enough to always had visible abs and my eating style has always been the same. I eat like a wild animal in the way that I can go days without eating or eat 10,000 calories in one sitting. Almost anything is possible, still, take this to heart and mind.
From time to time, I’ll use My Fitness Pal to track my caloric intake. We all know that caloric surpluses and deficits are a key component to either gaining or losing weight. Depending on what you eat and how you exercise, that weight could either be fat and/or muscle. If you are fully committed and prioritize your weight-loss or weight-gain journey as more than important than enjoying what you eat, or if you don’t care what you eat, you’re going to make the most efficient progress. However, there are not so many who can maintain that dedication.
Chocolate Peanut Butter Protein Cookies (No-Bake)
Could you have a better combination of words? Chocolate Peanut Butter Protein Cookies. Yum. Oh and don’t forget the no-bake part! What! I was so excited when I saw this recipe that I had to make my own variation! You may get that I’m excited due to the back-to-back exclamation points. This was an incredibly easy recipe. As I was putting it together, I kept thinking, is this really going to work? Spoiler alert: it worked and it’s damn delicious! There is no cooking time to these cookies and they are chock-full of protein! Often times, adding protein powder to baked goods can give them weird textures and flavors. Not this one! You wouldn’t even suspect that there was anything added to these cookies besides deliciousness.
Whole-Wheat Medieval Honey Biscuits
I have continued my journey with the Ice and Fire cookbook (aka Game of Thrones for you tv-lubbers). Last time we dined at the Wall. Now we move to the South to Lord Caswell’s table. This recipe comes from A Clash of Kings. It’s been a lot of fun to try out different recipes, especially from this cookbook! This recipe is pretty easy to do. I’ve healthified it a little bit by using whole-wheat flour which increases the fiber and keeps your blood sugar from spiking like it would with white flour. I paired these as a dessert to the Healthy “Accidentally” Paleo Meatballs and they were a hit! This is an authentic medieval recipe, just altered to fit Hungry and Fit’s needs!
Healthy “Accidentally Paleo” Meatballs
Hungry had a long day at work on a Saturday (yuck!) and I had a hankering for cooking, so I wanted to make him a nice dinner. I am a vegetarian while he is not, so I don’t cook a lot of meat dishes. However, tonight I would! We had some nice lean beef in the house, so I wanted to make scrumptious meatballs! However, we didn’t have any breadcrumbs…hmm… Luckily, I was able to find a recipe to base mine off of that lacked breadcrumbs. This actually turned it accidentally into a “paleo” recipe. Hungry and I are far from being paleo, but I know it’s popular right now, so maybe this will help you out!
Big Slice for a Healthy Change [GIVEAWAY]
And no, we aren’t talking about a big slice of pizza. Have you ever been on the go, either running to or from a workout, work, an event, or ANYTHING and just wanted a healthy snack? Chances are you don’t have anything on you, and the closest thing around as a snack is either unhealthy or overpriced. I find myself in this predicament far too often. It gets especially worse with me because I get hangry (and it ain’t pretty). Sometimes, I just need a simple, healthy small snack to keep me going while I go from A to B. I am very grateful to finally have found something that fits this need.
A Normal Person’s Normal Day of Eating
We’re all human, far from perfect and susceptible to bad decisions. Yesterday, I had one of those truly mortal moments when at the end of a relatively clean day of eating, I lost it… all. As a result, I thought I would share in a somewhat educational and somewhat comedic way, what my day of caloric consumption looked like.
Indian Tofu Mushroom Curry
I don’t know about you, but Hungry and I love Indian food: the flavors, the different textures, the unique combinations. In fact, it’s our most often ordered “take-out” or “take-away” as they say in New Zealand. What better to fill a grumbling tummy than a beautiful heaping plate of curry, rice, and naan? I’m drooling just thinking about it. SO when we had a block of tofu that needed using, I decided to go with an Indian style dish. It’s easy, it’s delicious, it’s nutritious: our favorite three. We hope you enjoy this Indian Tofu Mushroom Curry–inspired by Honest Cooking.
How to Like Greek Yogurt
I’ve been there. I’ve been handed my first Greek yogurt (it was the new magical thing), I’ve dug my spoon into the yogurt with anticipation, and I’ve stuck my tongue out with disappointed disgust. For me, at least, Greek yogurt was not a love at first sight. It was a hill to climb to enjoy it. The thickness, the sourness–it was hard to get down. I’m pretty sure I made a retching sound and handed it back to whoever gave it to me in the first place. Not dramatic at all. Why am I telling you this? Because now I love Greek yogurt! I got there because it’s full of protein and it’s a great part of my nutrition. And you can too. Follow these 5 steps.
Simply the Best BBQ Sauce
One of the goals here at Hungry & Fit HQ is to provide our readers with low-budget alternatives. We also try to keep things as healthy as possible. I was alarmed recently when I decided that I wanted to have some BBQ sauce at home to add to our condiment arsenal and found some less than stellar options at multiple groceries. Every single option at a major grocery chain had high fructose corn syrup in it as one of the top ingredients. (The macros were NOT the friendliest, even to flexible dieters.) When I finally found some healthier choices at Whole Foods, the value just wasn’t there. I was looking at $5 small bottles, and I don’t know about you, but I like to use a lot of BBQ sauce. I decided at the time to bite the bullet and spend the extra money (because I love good flavor) but unfortunately, I was not impressed.
