Born Tough: Fitness Apparel Review

When I started in the fitness industry, nearly 15 years ago, there were nowhere near as many brands as we see today. From pre-workouts and protein bars to fitness apparel and online coaching, advancements in social media and the internet have created a massive boom. While we’ve been asked to review an incalculable number of products and services, you might be surprised to know that many never make it to the blog. While there are brands we love that we drive valuable traffic to every day, there are also brands that we would never recommend because they’re painfully obvious money-grabbing attempts to capitalize on the growth in our industry. Then, there are the brands in the middle of the pack.

For me, Born Tough is one of those brands and the next few years could make or break the business.

The Ultimate Men’s Jacket for Fall

The ultimate. I know, that’s a bold statement. How could I possibly make such a claim about a product that has only been launched this week? I don’t need to look any further than Oliver’s All Over Short. After being introduced to it just a month ago, I’ve already decided that it is hands down my favorite pair I’ve ever owned or worn.

A New Kind of Champion

This post brought to you by Sports Authority . The content and opinions expressed below are that of hungryandfit.

As you guys know, I’m on a mission with some certain summer fitness goals. More specifically, I’ve been working on bodyweight exercises like increasing my pull-ups, push-ups, wall sits, handstand push-ups, and planks. It’s a mix of muscular endurance and strength. I need fitness apparel and clothes that aren’t going to confine me and give me seamless comfort, letting me give pure performance. Have you ever had clothing that were just too tight in some place and distracting during your workout? No bueno. That’s why I choose to take Champion GEAR on my workout journey and fitness goals.

Get Phitt! Drive the Movement

A few months ago, Hungry joined a new project because he has serious problems focusing on one thing at a time. Opportunities to try something else come often but it’s a rarity to find a real diamond in the rough. They’re usually rocks in the rough. There are hundreds of thousands companies and causes that you haven’t heard of and you probably never will. Not everyone can be Chipotle, Starbucks, and Apple but in order to get anywhere near there you need to have a vision and drive. “Too low they build, who build beneath the stars.” (Edward Young) You need to be willing to put that dream high on your priority list; higher than working out, eating, and even sleeping.

Workout Like a Boss #teamviewsport

If you don’t enjoy this post, then you need to rethink life. Just kidding, but who doesn’t enjoy Hungry and I wearing ridiculous stuff? Yeah that’s happening. We represent ViewSPORT, which has some seriously awesome gear. And the best part is that it’s at a good price. We had a blast wearing their gear for workouts. You get plenty of compliments and it’s comfy

We recently both bought a top and a pair of leggingsYes, Chris wore a pair of women’s leggings, and looked like a BOSS. We agreed that both of our leggings were super comfy to workout in, especially important on leg day! They fit us up well and I was never checking to make sure I was all covered up because it simply felt right. Hungry said that they worked really well for him, he was surprised. Mine were just awesome. Chris got the leopard print leggings and I got the Star Wars leggings (duh)–yes they are epic.

The tops are super awesome as well and especially unique from other companies. Unlike other sports or athletic apparel, ViewSPORT makes sweat-activated apparel. Yup, I’m serious. So sweaty messes like me can actually be proud of our drench marks that now activate the hidden words “I am a beast.” I’m not familiar with any other company that does this so I’m loving it. Definitely going to order some more gear. And I’m sure I’m not the only one who thinks Hungry looks great in his new workout shirt.

As you can see on his shirt, it says “I AM” and then it will activate words below with sweat!

Boom

Boom

It’s important to have separate workout clothes so you don’t mess up your normal clothes. And I know some people can’t afford the really expensive athletic gear. Well guess what, this apparel is reasonable. It’s completely worth the money you put down for it and it will not break the bank. Well, maybe if you order ten pairs of leggings, but I won’t judge you.

What’s in Your Gym Bag? Part 1

This is labeled “Part 1” because you will get Fit’s gym bag in a few posts later! There is no definitive answer to this one since I have so many gym bags for different gyms and types of workouts. I stock different bags depending on what and where I plan on working out. We have a huge amount of our own workout equipment and once again, depending on my goals and plans, this can change greatly. I will, however, say what I always have in my gym bag… 90% of the time.

Creepy picture of my gym bag!

Creepy picture of my gym bag!

Tiger Balm. A lot of it. Ultra Strength tins and Muscle Rub tubes. Whenever I am sore or stiff, I like to apply some muscle rub to my muscles and/or ultra strength to my joints. I have a pocket that holds about two of each.

The other side pocket has a few locks. I usually keep a combination lock and a key lock, with the key in it. I workout at a few facilities and most of them provide lockers but no locks. I don’t typically bring a wallet to the gym and I keep my phone on me for music and recording my workouts but I would rather someone not steal my clothes while I am swimming so I have to drive home in my towel.

The front section, in my normal gym bag that I have been using lately (one of Alana’s old soccer bags), holds my staple swimming gear for my post-workout recovery swims. I have my towel from Korea, a size 30 Dolfin ugliezzzzz drag suit, Speedo contoured paddles, and prescription Speedo vanquishers with a bungee.

In the big section, I usually keep my Flexsports elastic wrist straps, an old leather belt, a heavy resistance band, two utility jump-ropes, a clean gym towel, my Big & Little’s snapback/trucker hat, some knee wraps, two Captains of Crush (right now a Trainer and Level 1), a Lacrosse ball, ProGryp circle grips, 3B Kinesio tape, an Aylio heavy hand extensor band, and a pair of Madgrip utility gloves.

Those are the staples. Clothes change, supplements change, footwear changes, and additional gear changes, again, depending on the workout. I might bring a weight vest, ankle weights, wrist weights, different grips, fins… who knows… we have a lot of stuff.

I didn’t include all the details such as color, brands, sizes, etc but there is a lot of information here. I usually try to workout with as little equipment as possible, but it is nice having it available if I decide to use it. So there you have it, that is my current staple gym bag.

If you are looking for something specific but you are unsure, feel free to ask and we can point you in the right direction! Remember any additional equipment should be used a tool but never a crutch! Use it to improve but use it in moderation and don’t let it use you! And as always…stay hungry and fit!

  • Question of the Day: What do you have in your gym bag?

Hungry’s New Favorites: Frozen Kiss Apparel

Back in Boulder, through a friend that has lived in Boulder for decades, I found out about a local clothing brand owned and created by his friend. His friend, who I won’t name because he was not consulted about this post but may be featured in the future, is from Boulder but spent time in California and really seems to appreciate living right. That is, enjoying life and being positive, while sharing those good feeling with other people.

He is now spreading that through his Frozen Kiss apparel brand. You can find the clothing on his shop on Etsy (an online store for handmade and homemade goods and more!). If you had been following me on Twitter, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram or our other pages, you would see how I have been featuring the tanks.

My orange tank is made from American Apparel and has been hand embroidered. The fabric is of the highest quality and is ethically made in the United States. The brand name is on the front and the classic Colorado design is on the back. As a result, you are paying a premium price for all of that goodness but it is worth it. The tanks are perfect for the summer and warm days in general. They are comfortable sleeping shirts or for wearing around the house. The hoodies are just as good and the shop offers a New Mexico-based design as well. Finally, the color selection is tremendous… very fun and different.

Hungry and Fit are enjoying their Frozen Kiss apparel and hope to create ties with the company in the future to offer fans of both some custom Frozen Kiss/Hungry and Fit gear for healthy lifestyles! We’ll keep you posted on that progress and let us know in the comments below if you’d be interested in some apparel by sharing your ideas!
