The Greatest Movies of All Time

A few weeks ago, we wrapped up our Top 10 Greatest Movies of All Time. We treated this exercise the same as our 25 Greatest Video Games Ever Countdown, which allowed everyone involved to determine their own guidelines for their list. If you’ve been following and reading the captions each week, you’ll notice that some lists spanned over the lifetime of a writer, while others were based just in their childhood. It is intriguing to say that least.

We decided once again to compile the lists and create our consensus Top 5 Movies of All Time. There were much fewer similarities this time around. The only movies repeated on two lists were Blade Runner, Beauty and the Beast, The Dark Knight, The Fifth Element, The Lion King and Life Aquatic. The only movie that made three lists was The Empire Strikes Back. Star Wars films had five mentions while Lord of the Rings filmed only had two. Other series were even less represented, which speaks volumes about the numbers of films that exist and the diversity in our writers.

Without any further wait, here are…

The Top 5 Movies of All Time:

1. The Empire Strikes Back (25 pts)

2. Blade Runner (20 pts)

3. Beauty & the Beast (12 pts – 1st place vote)

4. The Dark Knight (12 pts)

5. Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring (14 pts split between two films)

But why end there? We thought it’d be interesting to work with Rotten Tomatoes and see who has the most critically acclaimed list. Also, we decided it would be worth looking at the average age of each person’s list. We’re not surprised to see that Hollywood’s own Randy Powell scored the highest at 95%. We’re also not surprised to see that Hungry’s heavily animated and fantastically adventurous list scored lowest at 72%. (It is worth mentioning that Hungry had the only movie without a score on Rotten Tomatoes.)

In terms of age, Randy also had the oldest movies, with an average year of 1974, while Sophie had the “youngest” list at 2002. The youngest single movie on the list was Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2, which was released in 2017. The oldest single movie was 1942’s Casablanca.

It is also worth noting that Hungry & Fit had the most animated movies on their lists, with three each. You can find the complete lists below. Let us know which list is your favorite and which one you’d want to watch the most in a movie marathon. Also, let us know what kind of countdown you’d like to see next. We’re thinking it might have something to do with reading!
