5 Tips to Getting Rid of a Stuffy Nose Fast

Getting sick is no fun and if you suffer from stuffy nose you know just how challenging it can be to go about your daily duties while experiencing sinus pressure and pain. Whether you experience congestion due to weather related allergies or you were lucky enough to catch a cold from a family member or friend, there are simple home remedies that you can do to help alleviate some of the pain you are feeling. This article will provide some tips to getting rid of your stuffy nose fast!

  • Use a neti pot. While not the most glamorous of options, using a neti pot can help you clear your nasal passages in a natural and pain-free way. The easiest way to use the neti pot is to fill it with warm water and stand with your head above the sink. Most neti pots provide detailed instructions and picture diagrams to show you how to position your head to the side so that as you pour water in through one nostril, mucus and other gunk can come out the other nostril. Be sure to look into a neti pot as they are inexpensive, can be reused, and work well.
  • Use a humidifier in your room. A humidifier can take water and create it into a vapor that will add humidity to the air and help relieve some of the sinus pain and pressure that you are feeling. A humidifier can be used to help with allergy or runny nose irritation as well as bloody noses. Often times a bloody nose is caused from dryness in the air which can be prevented by using a humidifier. It is good to invest in items for your home that have multiple uses and a humidifier is one of those things.
  • Drink plenty of fluids. Drinking water or tea can help your body stay hydrated which is important when you are not feeling well. Fluids help to flush your body of toxins and other things that may be causing you to feel ill. Drinking plenty of water also helps to break down excess mucus that you have clogged in your nasal passage. Water helps to break down the mucus and flush it out of your system.
  • Consider trying a decongestant. While many decongestants are sold over the counter at your local drug store, you will still need to ask for it from the pharmacist. Many Pharmacies now store the medicine behind the counter so that it is not purchased and abused for unnecessary uses. A decongestant, when used as directed and appropriately, can help decrease the pain and swelling that one may feel due to their runny nose. If you are unsure of whether or not this medicine will work for you, be sure to consult your medical provider for the best solution to your stuffy nose.
  • Use a warm compress on your head. Sometimes having a stuffy nose or congestion can bring additional side effects along with it. For example, a stuffy nose could cause sinus pressure which could then cause a headache. If you are feeling as if nothing is working for you and now you also have a headache, try laying down and applying a warm compress to your head and nose. A warm cloth can help release some of the tension and provides calming properties as well.
