Chado Tea Room

My Nana passed away a little over a year ago and I wanted to celebrate her somehow. So, I started looking up places where the family could have high tea. After searching around a bit, I found Chado Tea. It was close by (we went to the Hollywood location), didn’t seem too pricey, and had good reviews. You may have seen some pictures from there in an earlier post. All in all, it was a good and fun experience.

The location/ambience. This tea room is located in the Hollywood Highland Death Star of a mall. Naturally, that place is hard to navigate. The tea room is kind of sliver-shaped. There’s inside and outside seating. Outside, you have the hustle and bustle of mall traffic and tourists. Inside, it’s a tight fit. There are around ten tables fit in a variety of ways. The back of the shop is lined with tons and tons of different kinds of tea and tea pots which were rather fun to look at.

The service. I would say this is the one big downside to this place. I had made a reservation for the six of us and when we arrived, they weren’t quite ready. We got seated ten or fifteen minutes later after our reservation. They were quite busy and seemingly understaffed. There were only two people really as “waiters” and another would come pour the tea. This made for incredibly slow service. Luckily, we weren’t in too much of a rush. The staff were very nice, but they didn’t get around to us enough.

The tea. Now, this was the most fun part! We ordered four “afternoon tea” sets which meant four pots of tea. We all discussed and picked four different ones: two blacks, one green, and one white. It was a lot of fun to try them all and see what we all thought. We drank a lot of liquid! They have an incredibly huge collection of teas–a whole menu book dedicated to it! Delicious.

The food. With the four sets we bought, we got lots of scones, sandwiches, and little cookies. I was stuffed, but Hungry ordered some side dishes like their chicken tikka masala. I ate the cucumber sandwich and an egg salad sandwich, but I particularly enjoyed the egg salad sandwich. The scones were delicious. We were given some jam and cream to put on them. There were also little cups of mousse and cookies, but I was too full and sweeted out to really eat those.

I would go here again. We all had a wonderful time celebrating Nana, trying different teas, and munching our way through little sandwiches. The price is right for a tea room: $18 per “afternoon tea” set-up, and +$3 for extra people on the tea sets. Although it is a crowded area and service is slow, the tea and food are delicious and it’s simply a fun experience. We got semi dressed up and enjoyed high tea. I would recommend this place if you aren’t in a rush. And as always, stay hungry and fit!
