How to Make Porridge

To many Americans, porridge seems like it must go along with the words, “Please, sir, can I have some more?” As if it’s an orphan’s food or something similar to that. Not exactly in a bad way, but it’s kind of funny. In Commonwealth areas, like New Zealand, porridge is a wonderful, comforting breakfast that warms the soul. It may seem like an easy thing to make, and it is once you’ve got the hang of it, but there is an art to making porridge. It’s easy to overcook it, undercook it, or get it so clumpy it doesn’t resemble porridge anymore. I’m here to bring you the tips and tricks of the porridge trade!

Ingredients
  1. 1 cup water
  2. 1/3 cup toasted oat bran
  3. 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  4. pinch of salt
  5. 1 tsp maple syrup
  6. 1/4 cup milk
Instructions
  1. Put water, oat bran, cinnamon, and salt in a pot and put on medium heat
  2. Wait for it to start bubbling and then stir frequently
  3. After 3-5 minutes of constant stirring and bubbling, take off heat
  4. Pour oats (there should be no liquid) into a bowl
  5. Drizzle maple syrup on top
  6. Pour milk on top and serve

  1. I like to mix everything up once I pour the milk on top so it doesn't solidify

There you have it. Yes, it’s simple, but it makes a mean bowl of porridge. I highly suggest you have this with a nice cup of tea and maybe some fruit on the side. Mix it around, enjoy it, and share with someone! This is a wonderful way to start the day, full of fiber and energy! My mum has been making it for years and I’m lucky enough to know the perfect way to make it just right. It’s ideal for grey mornings but will do for any day! Eat porridge to stay hungry and fit!

    I would just use a pinch of salt, not a 1/4 teaspoon. I have this for breakfast with fresh raspberries and blueberries on the side. Yummy!
