What Game of Thrones is Missing

The Greyjoys.

Recently, as I was driving through LA, I saw this apple TV banner. While I haven’t watched Game of Thrones since the end of the first season came out live, I’ve heard a lot about it from others. Since we read the books before the TV series was out, we were shocked to find out they were making a series in the first place. No one else knew what A Song of Ice and Fire  was since it came out in the early 90s. I can’t imagine there were too many people out there that were more excited about this show than us.

In the beginning, it bothered us a bit. As you could imagine when you’ve been trying to turn people onto something for a long time, only for them to say they wouldn’t like it. Well, they did… they all did and it’s been a great success for the series. Over time, we accepted the fact that A Song of Ice and Fire is the series and A Game of Thrones is an over-sexualized television adaptation that would captivate viewers and turn into a profitable venture. They are two completely different entities.

When I overhear conversations in public or at work about the newest episodes, I would sometimes listen enough only to find out that some of the greatest moments in the series have been neglected or butchered. It’s clearly different for everyone and entirely subjective based on what you enjoy, but I’m going to move forward and make a bold statement that all should keep in mind.  The Greyjoys are one of the most important families in the series, especially now.

This billboard must clearly be talking about Season 1 for apple TV because the relevance of the Baratheons is near to none at this point. I heard that they killed Stannis in the show when he’s still possibly alive in the books. With all three brothers dead, there’s really no hope for that family. The Lannisters have made the most significant fall from glory as they were the most powerful family in Westeros for quite some time. With Joffrey and Tywin dead, Jamie maimed, and Cersei disgraced, their hope falls on the shoulders of a far-removed Tyrion.

Since I truly believe that the Targaryens are fire and Starks are ice, there is no doubt in my mind that they will be standing on the highest ground when the series truly ends. Despite bleak times, they will come back so their banners belong, but the other two should be replaced surely with the Greyjoys and possibly with either the Martells or Dorne or even the Boltons of the Dreadfort. Whether that banner is relevant to this season or not, the Greyjoys are a deciding force in the fate of the world.

Theon and Asha aside, who have both played large roles already, Euron, Victarion, and Aeron are three of the most intriguing characters in the series right now. Euron is on the path to use supernatural items obtained in Valyria to control Dany’s dragons, while Victarion commands a fleet capable of changing the outcome of the battles in and around Slaver’s Bay. It’s worth mentioning that he commands it with an ashen arm, which proves that R’hollr and his priests do hold some physical manifestation of their powers.  I think we’ve yet to seen the powers of the Drowned God and with the way the series has developed, there is supernatural power yet revealed. Stay hungry and fit!
