How to Train in the Winter

It can be not-so-fun to train in the winter. Your skin is dry, your hands are freezing, and your muscles won’t warm up. We’ve teamed up with PowerBar to bring you some much-needed tips and guide points so that you can train in the winter. Team Elite athlete and American long distance Josh Cox has come up with the following:

Birch Paper Goods [GIVEAWAY]

A card. Good for literally any occasion. However, what are the chances you’ll actually find a great card? Not a good one, a great one. One made with good materials with beautiful artwork like it was crafted rather than simply printed from a machine. Not only should it look nice, but the words should be spot on too. Nothing cheesy, embarrassing, or just bad–make it fun, bright, and clever. That’s where Birch Paper Goods makes an entrance. Their tagline is literally: Fun, Whimsical Greeting Cards, Yay!

Birch Paper Goods makes cards that are clever, whimsical, and heartwarming. They make you smile. They make you giggle. They make you appreciate the art. When’s the last time you appreciated art from a card? I certainly can’t remember the last time. These cards make you want to proudly display them, say, on the fridge or somewhere where the public in your home can see.

To boot, they are affordable! you go to stores and they don’t have a card you want, but end up settling on a decent one. And then you turn it around and you see it’s a $15 card. Welp… At Birch Paper Goods, a single card costs $4 and a pack of 8 for $15. With the quality of these cards, I’d say that’s a steal.

Getting Back At It

It’s the most wonderful time of the year and every night you have a holiday party booked. An ugly sweater here, a kiss under the mistletoe there, and one too many glasses of eggnog everywhere. As we look towards making resolutions for 2016, let’s try to survive 2015 first and as we’re shoving endless calories and drinks down our throats, let’s try to balance that with something to help us recover.

A Techie Weighs in on a Smart Scale

Sometimes it can be really challenging to get someone who isn’t interested in physical activity to start caring about their health, especially when you care about them or their progress. A huge population of individuals that are lacking in the exercise category are often those who spend hours and hours in a chair every day. They might be eating so little that they’re avoiding being overweight, but that doesn’t make them healthy.

Big Slice for a Healthy Change [GIVEAWAY]

And no, we aren’t talking about a big slice of pizza. Have you ever been on the go, either running to or from a workout, work, an event, or ANYTHING and just wanted a healthy snack? Chances are you don’t have anything on you, and the closest thing around as a snack is either unhealthy or overpriced. I find myself in this predicament far too often. It gets especially worse with me because I get hangry (and it ain’t pretty). Sometimes, I just need a simple, healthy small snack to keep me going while I go from A to B. I am very grateful to finally have found something that fits this need.

Hungry & Fit’s Christmas Lists

Hungry and Fit aren’t big on birthdays, the 4th of July, Easter, or most holidays that fall outside of the last three months of the year. Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas are definitely the most celebrated in our household. Since we’re sticking to the holiday season theme for a lot of our posts recently, we thought we’d add another fun one and hope, in turn, to learn some more about you, our readers.

Mac n Cheese Will Never Be the Same

It’s like an episode of Chopped. Why would you transform a perfectly delicious and prepared food into an ingredient of another dish? More importantly, how would you do it? Obviously, because you can and it makes the other dish THAT much more enjoyable. Halfpops are a delicious snack that are far more provocative to eat than popcorn with that additional textural crunch. What’s even better is that these little bites (which remind me of a Peruvian choclo corn) have more flavor than your standard popcorn, but don’t achieve that by sacrificing your health or your waistline.

So now, we look at macaroni and cheese, arguably the greatest food ever. While most enjoy it out of the box with a flavor packet (and there is nothing wrong with that), it is becoming elevated more often and served in fine restaurants for the same price as a steak. A prime example would be a lobster mac. We all know that the key component has always been a rich and creamy cheese sauce, but more attention is slowly being given to the baked breadcrumb or panko crust.

Well, let’s just blow this whole textural concept out of the water and take it to another level. Enter the already mentioned Halfpops. While making your famous mac n’ cheese recipe, toast some half pops on low heat and make sure they don’t burn. You can use the aged cheddar, chipotle, or sea salt. I’d recommend saving the caramel ones for dessert. As soon as you’ve finished your mac, serve with a bowl of toasted Halfpops and allow each diner to choose how much crunch they want. I’ve gotten to the point where I want at least two bits of crunchy delight in each mouthful, but I’ll leave that part up to you because making decisions on how to eat your mac n’ cheese might make the different in you staying hungry and fit!

Creed Sequel in 2016

*Spoilers about Creed coming up*

Creed was extremely predictable, as it followed the patterns set forth in the original Rocky movie. By doing so, it was a successful film and almost unarguably the best since the first two. (I know some of you, myself included, have a certain love for the fourth.) Before the final match even began, we all knew that Pretty Ricky was going to secure a victory by decision, but Adonis would earn his respect and give him the fight of his life in the process. Rocky himself foreshadowed it by saying that Apollo was the better boxer during his lone victory over the GOAT, but his heart pulled him through.

Can’t Face Your Healthy New Year’s Resolutions? Meditate!

This post was written by Holly Ashby, who works for Will Williams Meditation, a meditation centre who provide classes on meditation in London.

So, it’s that time of year again where the shops stop encouraging you to eat and drink like there is no tomorrow, and are suddenly rolling out all their “January detox” ranges. We are often encouraged on cycles of feast and famine, rather than simply taking joy in both food and exercise and living life happily.

There’s no reason not to get a little healthier as the New Year kicks in. Just remember to do it at your own pace, for your own personal goals rather than other people’s expectations, and in a way that makes you as happy as you are healthy. There’s also no need to set impossible goals – just to exercise a little more, and eat a little healthier after enjoying the holiday excesses.
