A Pizza Revolution: Pieology vs Pizza Rev

It might not have been Subway, but it seems that the sandwich juggernaut gets the credit for redefining the fast food experience. That extra amount of ownership that you have over the finished product because you had more of a, say, than normal in the constructive process brings you back for more. Chipotle is the latest company to turn billions of dollars from this consumer experience and while small poke shops are barely keeping their head above water doing the same, the dream remains for chefs and entrepreneurs. They’re looking for the perfect food for an untrained chef to put together lunch-lady style. This food would have to be easy to assemble, use inexpensive ingredients, and popular. Was anyone else thinking of pizza?

Fairly recently, two make-your-own pizza stops have arrived in Koreatown, just a five minute walk from one another. On the corner of Wilshire and Vermont you have Pizza Rev, while just a few blocks west on Wilshire you can find Pieology. Pieology made a bold move by opening after Pizza Rev, but will it pay off? Only time will tell, but what I will tell you right now, are some of the differences to expect. As an Italian-American pizza snob from the New York metropolitan area, I’m not here to tell you if either pizza is actually good. Instead, my goal is for you to be able to choose the one closer to your liking and taste after reading this. So let’s make this short and sweet, like the lines at both.

That’s right. For starters, don’t expect to be waiting long at either of these locations. Pizza Rev is a little busier because of it’s location next to the Metro but it also has a great online order system for pick up. Neither one of these two have pizza masters that can put together your masterpiece in mere seconds but the lines move quickly and the pizzas cook fast. I would expect, as they’re open longer and if the staff stays, that process will be even quicker. I’ve seen it at Subways, so there’s no reason not to expect it here.

As for the pizza, if you’re looking for a wider selection of options in terms of toppings, go for Pizza Rev. They seem to have far more protein options, although Pieology gives you the choice of making a salad with the pizza toppings instead. Pieology also has higher quality ingredients and toppings, which can be a deciding factor for some. If you want to feel completely gluttonous go to Pizza Rev, but if you want to fool yourself into thinking that wasn’t so bad for you, go to Pieology. Either way, both give you the option of adding as many toppings as you want for the same price, so there’s freedom either way.

The staff at Pieology are slightly friendlier but don’t expect too many smiles at either. Both facilities are clean and have ample seating because they’re new but Pizza Rev slightly gets the edge for atmosphere. Pizza Rev also has a much larger selection of desserts and beverages, between fairly satisfying cookies and a nice selection of craft beers. Pieology wins brownie points for having Vitamin Water XXX on tap, but again, Pizza Rev has that fountain drink dispenser with a hundred options and a touch screen. As for parking, good luck with both because you’ll need it.

Hopefully, you know have the ability to choose between the two if you’re on the fence. Personally, I’ll probably be going back to Pieology more often than Pizza Rev, but that’s only because Honeymee is next door. We’ve told you a thousand times but we’ll say it again, you can still eat pizza and stay hungry and fit!
